Um, cost a lot more than 3-4 pp per combine. Shears molds cost about 80pp each!

And no, shears molds are sold in Gunthak, nowhere else.

Shears a really bad idea for smithing skillups, hehe. Not only are molds expensive, but they're only sold in Gunthak, and the nearest forge to Gunthak is clear up in Kejek (cat town in Stonebrunt). Neither cheap nor convenient to skill up on.

Shears are terrible to skill up on for two reasons: convenience and cost. Consider the facts:

1. Shears molds cost 74pp each with good faction

2. Shears molds are ONLY sold in Gunthak. Like all molds, they do not stack. If you are not a porter, getting there either requires buying a port to Stonebrunt or walking through the Warrens.

3. The other items you need -- hickory or elm bow staves -- are NOT sold in Gunthak. They also do not stack.

4. There is no forge in Gunthak. You will need to buy your shears molds and then take them elsewhere to forge. If you are a gating class this is less problematic, but if you are not, then you will have to find ports and/or hoof it. The nearest forge on foot is in the kitty village in Stonebrunt, but if you are an evil race, forget that. And it's a long walk and they don't sell the staves either.

5. Yes, they sell back for 71pp each, losing only 3 pp IF YOU SUCCEED. Every failure is going to cost you about 76pp (when you figure in the cost of your other materials), which is far more for a failure even than a fine plate breastplate.

Don't even consider shears for skilling if you have any scrap of sanity left.

To answer the other question, if you are a good race, the easiest essence to get is probably Clockwork Koi. Just have to sit down in Ak'anon and fish for a while, and check vendors.

May I suggest the road less traveled?

Deathsteel weapons. Using my mid-50s mage, I farmed Nurga for deathsteel ore, mountain death salts and goblin brews. Each trip usually gave me enough supplies for 20-40 combines, and in my opinion (yes, I know it doesn't actually work this way) I got condierably more skill-ups then I did working my way through silver ornate. Best of all, with the exception of the molds, it was free.

I actually made a considerable amount of money from the gem drops (a decent number of black pearls and opals and whatnot).

Nurga is a one-stop shopping pit, and takes you through the same trivials as ornate chain. If you have the character to farm it, you'll make enough to put a good dent in your future fine plate costs.

What is your class?

My suggestion:

Farm ore and FS in Sol A (the easy one) to do ornate chain. You'll earn money from the gobbos to buy the silver/electrum/gold and you'll be getting skillups.

By then you'll be of a decent skill to start working on plate and once you're skilled up to 188 you can probably start convincing people to farm stuff for your lower end cultural. It's amazing stuff on a new server and by the time you hit 210 or 220, you'll have a HUGE bank account, compared to other people.

Of course, then you'll have the problem of having to hunt down BDs for your high end armor and the only people that will have enough money for your stuff will be the strong soloers (BST, DRU, MAG, NEC) with higher level alts. But then again, a guild might buy their main tank some of the BD armor simply so that they can start looking at places like Kael and so forth.

Just wanted to confirm that this was around 3 or 4p to combine. I was just at lighthouse going to use this to bridge the gap and the shears mold was just over 93p!

The caveat was "with good faction" the price was... also charisma will have a large effect on prices. Make sure your charisma is 130 or better when buying/selling.

Another little tidbit is that Sonic Wolves and Owlbears are green to my 30th level Monk. The Humming Orbs are trivial at 168 and with the new bank accounts you can store the orbs on an alt (the substances are ND bu the orbs are not) for later training past 188 with SS armor. Now the Luclinite Mallet quest is a pain in the rump but you ought to be able to do that and prepare yourself for the most BORING but most cost effective method of training past 188: SS armor.
