Halfing smithing question

Hi all. I am a halfling and have a few questions about cultural smithing.

My smithing is at about 115, and has been since the days when SoL was just coming out. I however for a number of reasons have decided to raise it again.

In looking through the smithing pages of eqtraders, it seems the best thing for me to do for a while is some cultural combines. This requires me to do these at the "vale forge". I was wondering where this is? in rivervale? thanks

Also, where would i find platinum thread? if so how much? or if not purchased, what would the combine be from platinum bars?

In short: Umm... NO!

The longer version:

Halfling cultural smithing is NOT the option you think it is (well, if you have access to the Small Bricks of HQ Ore, the Vale Sewing Kits may be). The cultural smithing is merely used for subcombines for their primary cultural tradeskill: Tailoring.

***Info from the "Trade Supplies" and "Prices" section*** The Vale Forge is in Rivervale, yes, but you should leave it alone unless you are planning on doing Halfling Blue Diamond Cultural (tailored) armor. Platinum Thread? ~105pp, and in Erudin, Paineel, Cabilis, and Thurgadin.

On another note, you do realize what Celestial Temper requires? Blue Diamonds!!!


Personally, I would suggest looking into the Vale Sewing Kits, and keep Ornate Chain armor in mind.

From the information I've seen, the Vale sewing Kit is a cheaper skillup than Ornate chain, as each one costs less than 6pp to make, which is less than the loss when selling Ornate chain back to vendors. And it's pretty easy, too. Small pieces of HQ ore are easy to buy in PoK or bazaar. Or you get them from converting FS weapons.

The forge is next to the Foot Rest Inn, behind the bard that gives out the delivery quest. It's a small forge, so it's easy to miss.

BTW, I'm amiable in Thurgaden, and I pay 209pp for each platinum thread. I use them to tailor halfling WR bags. Definitely too expensive for any kind of skillup.

Vale sewing kits are indeed an excellent way to raise smithing to 162; you'll need to zone to Misty frequently to buy (non-stackable) needle and thimble molds. If you're not melting down fine steel weapons, I recommend going berserk in the bazaar with small bricks of HQ ore from the gnome vendor and a chisel. I did this from ~130, and needed a few stacks of HQ bits, but it was as painless as smithing gets.

Actually, the molds are available from Betty Brickbaker. She is across the Fool's Gold from the Vale forge, through the door that faces the Fool's Gold. The only thing you can't get in Rivervale is the Small bricks of HQ Ore.

If you can handle the weight, HQ ore is also sold in PoK. In case the problems with the bazaar scare anyone off.

IIRC, Platinum threads cost 105pp with good charisma, and any faction better then indifferent.

Lilosh, Cobi Frostbeard in Thrugaden /con's amiably and sells platinum thread for 209pp and change with a CHA of 140. Do I need more CHA? Or a better vendor? Saving 100pp per thread would help my profit margins a lot.

Platinum threads should be exactly 210pp at maximum faction and charisma. (Lately I've noticed that prices seem to be rounded down a copper, so they actually cost 209p 9g 9s 9c; anyone else seen that as well? Peridots are now 10p 4g 9s 9c, and so on.)

Knowing that needle and thimble molds are now sold in town is a massive boon, and would have saved a bit of zoning time, to be sure.

Fine Steel plate, only way to go from there. (well, unless you like wasting plat).

If you plan on becomming a GM smith, you could make humming orbs instead (triv 168) and bank them on a mule or 3 for when you actualy need them (after doing FS to 180 or so).
