Wailing substance?

Can anyone give me advice on where to farm this elusive item?
I have hear Yelloweyes in PC, but do the owlbears in HS drop it as well? It is no drop? stackable? I have a stack of shrieking substances, however, can't seem to have any luck with the wailing.

yep

The grimy owlbear cubs in Paludal will drop these. Also, in Hollowshade, if owlbears have taken over the grimling (south) camp, the owlbears in that area will drop wailing substances. (If sonic wolves have taken over the south camp, those will drop shrieking substances, saving you a trip to Tenebrous if you happen not to like that zone.)

Both wailing and shrieking substances are stackable and no-drop.

I've been leveling in Paludal Caverns, and Yelloweyes does drop wailing substances relatively often. I've been grabbing them since nobody else in the group wants them.

Grimy Owlbear Cubs

You can find a nice bunch of Grimy owlbear cubs in the Paludal Caverns at N/S -2000 E/W 400. About 4 spawn here and none seem to camp this spot you get a drop rate of about 1 in 3 so happy hunting to you

Wailing Substance

There is also a 2-spawn cave closer to the bandit camps. I don't know the loc, but here is how to get to it.

Enter Paludal Caverns from Shadowhaven. Go through the bandit camp, then go to your right and follow the path up the ledge. Eventually you will see a stone 'bridge' that goes over the chasm. Take the bridge and head left. Very soon you will see a tunnel on your right, take it. Take the next right and you will enter a short dead-end cave with two owlbear cub spawns.

My experience on Wailing Substances has been around 1 in 4 drop rate.

Went thru Paladul looking for the four spawn and found it at -2000,-400. So both numbers in the previous post are negative. Dunno if I was the only who made that mistake.

Yep, I noticed that too.

However, PC is a great place to farm now.

I come in, hit the 2 cub cave, then run to the 4 cub cave; clear that out, and by the time I make it back to the 2 cub cave, they have, or are about to respawn. Rinse, repeat.

I haven't timed it yet, but I think they are on a 6 min timer.

Now if only I can find a static spawn points with reliable drops for the sheriking substance I'd be one happy man.. err... elf

Its actually like an 8 minute 30 second timer I think.

You can actually farm all 3 spawns (2spawn, 4spawn, yelloweyes in that order) before a full cycle if you can kill the 4spawn quick enough.

This question seems to be asked a lot. Frankly I'm not that familiar with the wailing substances (did the quest a long time ago and only farmed 1 place for them). If anyone wants to right a brief summary of the best places to get the substances and post it on the FAQ thread, I'd appreciate it.

It's strange, the 4 spawn room is on a 6-7 minute timer(they pop just before corpses with other junk on them rot) and the 2 spawn room is on an 8 minute timer. I can run back and forth between the two, but it is OH so annoying. By some strange twist of fate, the owlbears had Hollowshade before the patch so I was farming there like a mad man.

a couple days ago i found the best place in the game to get wailing substance, well i think its the best. find out how to get the owlbears to take over the islands in hollowshade moor. on xev the owlbears are on the islands and i can get around a stack an hour, sometimes more.

I killed about 20 grimy owlbear cubs today on Quellious in PC and did not get a single wailing substance. Can anyone else confirm if verant changed the drop rate in PC or if I just had a very bad run of luck.

I don't think they changed the drop rate, I got a few in PC on AB yesterday. Drop rates seem to fluctuate, but I just think it's the RNG - somedays I can get 20 swirling shadows in an hour in Shadeweavers, other days it can be more like 3 hours. Same is true for Elven blood in GFay.

My best luck in getting wailing substance is when the owls own the grimling village in Hollowshade Moor.

I ph4rmed 100 last night. About one stack per hour.
