  • Folded Sheet of Metal

I have a question on folded sheets of metal.

My gnome is starting to tinker collapsed tradeskill containers. Three of the recipes require four folded sheets of metal.

I had my halfling make a stack of folded sheets:

Folded Sheet of Metal = block of ore + flask water + smithy hammer

Block of Ore = 3 large bricks of ore + flask water

Those large bricks of ore are heavy! My little halfling can only buy nine bricks before he gets pinned to the ground and can't move.

I just want to know if I'm missing anything. I have checked the smithing recipes and supplies pages. But I'm still wondering if Blocks of Ore are available somewhere or if you can fold a vendor purchased Sheet of Metal.

Are there any shortcuts to making folded sheets of metal that I may have overlooked?

    Thanks.

    Get some weight reducing bags

Grab a SoW. Even when heavily overloaded, you can still move with a SoW - albeit at snail speed.

The only one I know of is to smith in the Fordel section of SH. The smithing vendor and forge can be both opened without moving.

I’ve heard of people doing these combines in the bazaar because your weight won’t effect your movement there. However, considering how buggy the bazaar has been of late I wouldn’t recommend it until the zone gets fixed, assuming it ever does.

When making metal rings for chain jointing I use the above-mentioned forge in the Fordel section of Shadow Haven. It is next to Smithy Edcar, who has all the items you need for simple smithing tasks.

I do all my HQ sheets of metal in Bazaar, try fiddling with your settings to reduce lag. The special rules for weight in Bazaar make this well worth the effort in my opinion.

A moth ago I would have recommended the bazaar as well. But lately the zone has become very buggy. Whether its trading between players or doing trade skill combines, people have been losing items. Sometimes the items just vanish. Sometimes players suddenly go LD without their bars turning yellow, much less red, and log back in to find many of their components missing. I’ve read posts about this on many different boards. My own personal experience was making folded sheet of metal for smithing. I suddenly went LD for no apparent reason. I’m used to going LD at least once a day, but this time it was different. I logged back in and everything was in the forge except for my smithing hammer. I bought another smithing hammer and did the rest of my fine plate in PoK. So until I hear that people are no longer having these strange transfer and combine problems I don’t plan to risk my supplies in the bazaar.

In PoK the forge is only a few steps from the ore. SoW should be plentiful there, and weight reducing bags are your friend, but even if you have to kinda crawl from the merchant to the forge it's not so bad

                Folded Sheets of Metal

As most people said do this in SH or the Bazaar where you don't have to move or have no weight penalties. Or you could use sow potions (jboots?) and do these just about anywhere. From my experience the forge in SH is taken so I usually end up in PoK doing folded sheets. As mindless as it is to make them I find that it helps to make a couple stacks of them at a time so I don't find myself running to make more all the time. But I sell the collapsed pieces on my bazaar mule as a I make them, and am not powering for skill ups as I am simply too poor to absorb the financial loss from simply making and having them poof since "duplicate lore items are not allowed." Atleast the highest trivial one (Toolbox) doesn't use folded sheets so if you want to do that its a little easier.

Some of the ore merchants sell the blocks. I believe the one in north freeport does.

As said above, get weight reducing bags. MY smith has:

                  1) Grandmaster Carry-all (100% wt reducing)
                  2) Rallic pack (85% wt reducing)
                  3) large soiled bag (100% wt reducing) this is usually cheap, since it only holds small (hint even blocks of ore are small)
                  4) one of the 25% wt bags
5-8) either tailored backpacks, or the summoned GM trophy bags.

The large soiled bag is a great first bag for a smith. 100% wt reducing, and I paid 700pp for mine

I read this post and all I can picture is happy troll children stacking 9 blocks of metal, and using a halfling as a base......

I posted you should use Bazaar for sheets of metal and *bam* had exactly the same thing happen to me. Only lost the the smithing hammer fortunately but, you know, after all those stacks of sheet metal that thing had sentimental value to me

Of course troll children can't be too happy these days, cooped up in Neriak. Can't imagine the dark elf children are too happy with the "eau de troll" either...

Great. I'll check this out and give the data to Denmom to update the smithing supplies page if it's correct.

I know about weight-reducing bags and having a SoW up. I wanted to know if there was a short-cut to getting Blocks of Ore. The method I outlined just seems like a lot of work just to make a folded sheet of metal. If I can buy a sheet of metal, why can't I fold it? :?

But I thank you all for taking the time to reply to my question. My gnome is turning into a real money-maker with those collapsed containers.

I think it refers to real world smithing. I imagine a "sheet" as essentially rolled (or molded) metal, already rather thin and relatively lacking in strength. Folded sheet you have taken a block, flattened it a bit, doubled it over, flattened again, etc., etc. as you do in, say, making a sword (think Damascus Steel for swordblades in the middle ages, etc.)

Reference to your weight issue - is your gnome a casting class? Zopharr would always load up on bricks (or blocks, as needed), then gate to where he had conveniently bound himself next to the forge. [Garshok didn't really have that weight problem. ]
