  • mugs of sea foam

I m now stuck at the still of 190 and i ve been trying to figure out what would be there easier way too skill up, since i'm a human, i ve been looking into the cultural smithing way. Can anyone tell me how hard are the mugs of sea foam to get ? i ve read the drop of cyclop in oot, but how is the drop rate ? is there a lot of spawn ? what level are they ?

    Thank you.

Seafury Cyclopses in the Ocean of Tears are the ONLY source for Mugs of Sea Foam. There are about 5-10 spawns roaming the island next to the island which has the Ancient Cyclops spawn. Seafury Island also has the pirate outpost with Gornit on it.

Seafury Cyclopses range from level 38 to level 42 and hit for 68 max up to 76 max. You can tell their level by their max damage, since it increases by 2 for every level (68 dam at lvl 38, 70 dam at lvl 39, .. 76 dam at lvl 42). They have about 5k hitpoints.

Their Mug of Sea Foam drop is uncommon. Besides these, they can drop random research items of the kind that can be expected from mobs of this level, as well as Cyclops Eyes which are used in a Freeport Necromancer quest if I am right. They can also drop four kinds of gems (Fire Opal ~45pp, Star Ruby ~60pp, Fire Emerald ~80pp, Sapphire ~95pp) as well as four kinds of (statless) jewelry (Pearl Necklace ~4.5pp (which I think is a typo in the item price in SOE's database! It should be 45pp), Emerald Ring ~60pp, Opal Bracelet ~80pp, Mithril Amulet ~95pp).

You'll be hard-pressed to clear the whole island when you're alone. If 2-3 people are hunting there, you might need to look around from time to time. With 4+ people hunting there, you'll probably be competing for the spawns.

Besides the regular Seafury Cyclopses, the spawns can also be Quag Maelstrom, a named Cyclops for the Bard Epic, who uses a single-target mana-drain song (and he drains rapidly!). Higher level than the regular Seafuries. Also, a Tainted Seafury Cyclops can spawn, who is also higher level; when killed, a Corrupt Seafury Cyclops will always spawn on its corpse, which is needed for the Druid Epic. This mob is 50+ in level.

You can safely pull them from the Hill on which they roam down to the beach without getting adds (unless someone pulls them over you).

The Ancient Cyclops on the nearby island has regular Cyclopses as one of its placeholders and these regular Cyclopses share all of the characteristics of the Seafury Cyclopses.

      Seafoam mugs

I'm a human smith and I did some freeport cultural and honestly the shadowscream route is MUCH easier. The mugs drop about 1 in 7 kills and since you need 2 per attempt plus lots of cash(HQ Ore and molds) it gets to be really annoying. You can use the cash that drops to try to buy more mugs from other people, but usually there are 2 other people in the zone offering to pay top dollar for it.

Competition in the zone depends on the server, I think. The times I've been in the Ocean of Tears, I was the only one looking for them.

But, I agree. It takes too long to farm them all on your own. Looking at my own skillup rate, I need about 25 attempts per skillup on average. That's 50 Mugs per skillup, barring any failures on creating the Tempers to begin with. Considering that you want to reach 242 (when Imbued BPs become trivial), you're looking to collect roughly 2500 Mugs of Sea Foam.

Personally, I buy a lot of them in the Bazaar, or whenever I spot them on NPC vendors.

Very good post by Kaysha, just a few things to add:

Cyclops eyes can be used in an Alchemy recipe, this was fixed recently.

The corrupted seafury cyclops is a dangerous customer if you are soloing. Unlike the tainted it summons and many an unwary druid/shammie has found themselves searching for a rez after attempting this mob.

The mana drain from Quag Maelstrom is nasty on casters but for some reason is insignificant on bards - my bard regularily uses him as a pet for swarm kiting.

While medding or resting you can fish up saltwater seaweed, the cyclops never come right to the water's edge unless they are trained. Seaweed is rarely for sale in Bazaar I find and is necessary for sea temper.

If no one else is on the island, and the tainted/corrupted is not up, a bard can pull the entire island without much trouble. Not that either of those conditions can be satisfied very often, though.

I see them on vendors a lot. If I remember right they are 10.5p.

If you have a decent bankroll and OOT is regularly inhabited by adventurers, I would recommend buying the mugs as you fish/camp the cyclops. Offer up 5-10 plat each for them and you should build up your supply quickly.

Ofcourse, the 3 vendors around seafury island often times have a stock of mugs on them too. Especially the ruined area next to the AC spawn. I often had to mine through to find them, but between that and buying from players I could often walk away with 40-60 mugs a day. Sometimes closer to 100.

After I had been in OOT for a few weeks, several people began saving them for me. A few of them became good friends.

              Good luck,

When you said "all of the characteristics", I assume you meant that they could also drop the Sea Foam...because they can. The AC spawn point is a single spot and about 6 mins in time. If you do not engage, the spawn wanders around the island and back. The AC here is about 40th level and the cyclopses are not much lower. They are dark blue to my 54 human paladin and a very good source of exp while camping the AC/fishing for Sea Salt.

Yes, they are the same level (i.e. level 38-42), they hit for the same melee damage as their Seafury brethren, and they have the same loot table (which includes the mugs of sea foam).

Furthermore, the spawn time is exactly 5m54s, or 59 ticks, since the previous spawn was killed. The AC spawn there is always level 40.

Note that most of the people camping the seafuries are NOT after mugs of sea foam. They're eaither doing this for xp, plat, or both, or trying to get Quag or the corrupted to show up. As a result they usually dump off their sea foam at the first merchant they see. Sometimes they'll see it on Sister Island, but usually they wait til the boat docks in Freeport. Check the merchants in the Port Authority in East Freeport. Unless there's just been a patch or a server reset, they more than likely have some. Sells for about 10pp there. A lot seem to be popping up in PoK too, so you might want to check there as well.

If you camp them yourself, hehe, while you med, regen, or wait for a respawn, it's a great time to fish for seaweed you'll also need for the tempers. Seaweed is now nicely droppable ans stackable, both charateristcis that users of these tempers greatly appreciated when they were added. Also note seaweed can also be fished in Timorous Deep.

Honestly I didn't find the mugs to be all that rare when I was with somoene fighting these for cash and xp. About 1 in 5 seemed to drop them (maybe on creatures this high, you'd call that rare, but I think it would be fairer to say "uncommon.") I actually brewed a couple tempers with the sea foam (nobody else seemd to want them in my group), set price on them in Bazaar at 10pp and they sold almost immediately. Maybe I should have asked for more, hehe.

Just a quick correction on this note. Also in OOT there is an island just south of Sister Island that is inhabited by Aqua Goblins of various class (mostly melee, some SHM, some WIZ). In one of the little tents on top of one of the hills there spawns a Goblin Chieftain. He also drops the Mug of Sea Foam maybe once in every 5 or 6 kills. He or his placeholder (a Goblin Wizard if I remember correctly) spawns every 7-10 minutes. The Chieftain is low level, very green to me and a 1 to 3 hit kill at 42 when I was there. Not as plentiful as the furies, but still an alternative to get the drop.

I have been doing the human cultural route for some time now. I have set up a three pronged approach to get my smithing up. A run usually goes like this.

                        1) Gather enough for 80 tries of Shadowscream Gaunts.
                        2) Gather enough for 20 tries of Fine seafarers (Bracer).
                        3) Gather enough for 80 tries at Imbued Field Breastplate.

I start by burning the stack of blue diamonds, I have yet to ever see a skill-up making anything with them, but for some reason it seems to push the skillups when combining the other items. I do the breastplates next, then finnish with the shadowscream. My INT is at 285 and I average 2 Skillups per stack of combines.

                        As for collecting the items...
Mugs are IMHO the easiest to get. Just make daily runs past the two vendors in OOT and bring cash whenever you go. The drop rate isn't worth the pharm unless your getting XPs and can drop seafuries in 30 secs or so. My thinking is that if your not getting XPs you might as well be pharming something that has a better payoff (xp or cash).

Swirling Shadows... I think this is VI's attempt at a cruel joke. When I'm gathering them up in Shar Vahl I always get some poor noob who comes and complains that I'm taking all the mobs. Noone seems to understand that the camp is what I like to call a "0 Mob" camp. The moment you kill one of the skele's, another respawns. Several people can hunt here without stepping on other peoples toes. As for the drop rate, Using a gather 12 mobs then AE em routine, I see about a stack an hour. If your gonna gather them and AE like me, keep an eye peeled for those pesky skele's who try and head out of the area, they can slow your pharming if they escape.

Blue diamonds... Well I'm not gonna tell you where I pharm these at, I wouldn't want the company But it usually takes me 8 hours or so per stack, Maybe a little more. I still get XPs off the mobs so it's more of a camp to me then a pharm. Just keep in mind, the cost of a stack of BDs is roughly the same as 6 stacks of folded hq sheet metals.

Hope some of this info is helpful, I make my combines about every other week. Now if I can only figure out where to get sunlight at a stack per hour rate
