Skratchemhard’s Guide to Smithing
Now fer sure I be just a dimwitted Dwarf from Northern Kaladim, but a Dwarf that can’t use a forge is like a fish that can’s swim. Even bein one a Brell’s chosen with more wisdom than most other of my kin, I came up a bit short in the ole noggin.
So, it is vitally important, whether you are one a those high faluting snooty elves, or even one of those mischievous cousins of mine from Rivervale, you MUST get yerself a suit that will help you along with any of your chosen trades.
For smithing tho, it’s more important. At later stages the components can get upwards of a 100 pp per shot. Even if you succeed everytime, you will still lose pp selling it back to the vendor, and let’s not even think about when you fail on the combines. Hey, I didn’t say this was for the faint of heart, what are you, a Dwarf or a Goblin?
So, get yourself a tradeskills suit (and that includes primary / secondary / ranged / inventory). Then also get yourself some a those stat foods and drinks. I personally suggest Misty Thicket Picnics, they have STR (+5) and WIS (+5) modifiers, and the Qeynos Afternoon Teas for the WIS (+5) modifiers. I have not found a drink that has the Str and Wis modifiers both.
I would also recommend for Primary the Mace of Confusion, STR (+10) and WIS (+8). For Secondary get a Shield of Bane Warding WIS (+20) and for back use a Lodizal Shield WIS (+ 10). YES, I know that you can’t afford the PP at lower levels, I know that I couldn’t. But at some point you will want these anyway so save and get them early or quest them early. The Mace is pretty cheap from 300 to 500 pp. The other two are from 15 to 20k though, so start saving your pennies, or get a hand me down from someone. I won’t go into detail on every slot, cuz it’s different for every class, but these are some good ones for most classes.
Also, spend the time to get to ally status with the merchants in one of the areas that you will be spending a lot of time at doing this. The better your faction and Charisma, the cheaper it will be. I recommend doing the Inert Potion Quest in Erudin because it takes about 3 hours to get to ALLY status with about 5 different factions, including the merchants.
And lastly let’s mention buffs. WIS affects the rate you get skillups in the trade, while for Smithing, STR affects the rate of successful combines. I have heard all sorts of wild rumors about this, but it’s what is posted here in the TradersCorner and on several other posts. SO, get yourself KEI to raise your WIS +25 and it lasts over 2.5 hours long. Then get yourself a 57+ Shaman to cast Maniacal Strength to raise your STR +68 which lasts for 2 hours 24 mins. I have not yet found out whether the 62 Druid spell Nature’s Might (STR +55 and 1hr12 min) or the 63 Shaman spell Strength of the Diaku (STR +75 and 1 hr 12 min) will stack with Maniacal Strength. IF it does…WOOT !!!
OK NOW, ye have listened to my prattle for a good while now, so time to get down to the nitty gritty.
I would first like to give credit to Larien from the Lanys T’Vyl server. I used his guide as a starting point for my own. When he wrote it before the expansions, it was the crème of the crop for powersmithing. However new expansions knocked most trivs out of whack and changed prices. A lot of his guide is still good info, and I did use most of his info at least once, so consider this an Upgrade to his guide. THANK LARIEN.
1. Train in the guild til 21. Don’t even think about trying to save a few gold and do it yourself on rusty. It’s not worth the time and aggravation. Just pony up the skillpoint to 21 in Smithing on save yourself some Tylenol.
2. Now that you’re at 21, just sit down and make you 200 metal bits. Metal bits = 2 small pieces of ore, 1 flask of water. Combine. It’s boring, repetitive, and you will hate it, but it is necessary and it will get you broke into the mold of clik, clik, clik, clik, success, clik, clik, clik, failure.
Note-certain items will be returned on combines, such as the file and smithy hammer. You only need to buy these items once.
Note – SOE has fixed the issue of being able to combine while items are stacked. One can no longer make combines while items are stacked. However it would be nice to mention that you can hold down the CTRL key while left clicking on a stacked item to only get one of that item.
Note-Also prices will be in the format EQtraders uses. They are listed in Platinum in the decimal place. 9.524 would be 9 pp 5 gp 2 sp and 4 cp.
Note-You can find most of these items in Freeport, where I smithed until I killed that dastardly Sir Lucan D’Lere and became KOS to all the guards in E and W Freeport. The Pok also has all the items you need. But these are the best two locations. Just get your faction up and go to town.
3. From 21 to 41 make Scalers. 1 metal bit, 1 flask of water, 1 scaler mold. Combine, whalla, you have an item that no one has any idea what to do with. But it’s cheap to make and will go for 20 skillups. Just sell it back to the vendor. No one wants it or needs it. My cost was .166 each attempt.
4. From 42 to 68 make Lanterns. 1 metal bit, 1 flask of water, 1 bottle, and 1 lantern casting mold. My cost was .266 each attempt.
Note-It is not required, but if you’re at the level where you can take up tradeskilling, it never hurts to be kind to young ones. Humans can not see at night, so if your tradeskilling, hand a few of these out to newbie’s. It should make your heart feel good, and who knows, maybe Brell or Mithaniel Marr will be kind to you and give you a few extra skillups when its needed to keep the faith.
And yes, I have a lot of notes, read them.
5. From 69 to 74 make Dairy Spoons. 2 metal bits, 1 flask of water, 1 scaler mold. My cost was .270 each attempt. Save a few of these for sales or friends, bakers need them.
6. From 74 to 76 make Filleting Knifes. 3 metal bits, 1 flask of water, 1 scaler mold. SEE why I told you to make 200 metal bits? My cost was .374 each attempt.
Save a few of these if you wish, they are also used by other tradeskillers. Just put them in your trader’s satchel and throw a price tag on them. I wouldn’t keep more than 2 or 3 in there tho.
7. From 77 to 111 it will be a little more difficult, but not much. Make Worked Silver Chain. Buy 60 silver bars. This will require that you find a level 8 enchanter who has his enchant silver spell. Get him to enchant 60 bars of silver for you and make a donation for his time and efforts. Then it’s simply 1 metal bits, 1 silver bar, 1 flask of water. My cost was .604 each attempt (not including whatever you donated to the enchanter).
YEAH !! You are now done with the Metal bits and have reached the level Master in Smithing. Sell back all left over items unless you plan on giving them to an alt or making some products for others later like dairy spoons or filleting knives.
Now it should be said that you haven’t been spending 100’s of pp or losing all that much when you sell it back to the vendors to this point. As of now you have to make a decision. One is to slow down tremendously and farm a lot of junk, or two is to tie up your banker and steal your money to spend on ingredients for smithing.
I chose to tie up my banker, and I always will. Time is money here as it is in the RL (Real World for those who don’t know the anacronym.) I would much rather spend the pp and be done with it in a couple of days rather than spend months trying to run around and farm it.
That being said, the rest of my guide is based on buying all the stuff I need. I went from 111 to 155 on about 2500 pp. My cha buying and selling was 120 and my faction was indifferent. However, I was going off the old guide that was outdated and made many mistakes on trivs and items to buy. So your cost should be lower.
I skipped Banded altogether. You have passed the trivs on it. For ease of buying materials and again saving time (ya, I know us Dwarfs live a long time, but why waste it in the forge when I can be drinking an ale?) I made ornate armors.
First, make oh, I don’t know, 300 High Quality Metal Rings. (See a pattern here?) You are well past the triv. It takes 1 large brick of High Quality Ore, 1 flask of water, and a file. Combine and it yields 2 HQ metal rings.
Note-If the vendor is out of large bricks of HQ ore, do the Unrefined Ore Quest. I am not going to explain it, there is a well written quest explanation of it on Allakazams and EQTraders both, just look for it. This will restock the ore.
Now, I from here on I smithed in the Pok and the prices are rounded to the nearest Plat, why quibble (unless you’re buying me an ale).
Also, none of the silver or gold bars are enchanted, just plain old bars work.
8. From 112 to 122 make Ornate Chain Bracers. 1 HQ metal ring, 1 silver bar, 1 bracer chain mail pattern, 1 flask of water, and smithy hammer. My cost was about 11pp each attempt. Sell back to vendor.
9. From 123 to 132 make Ornate Chain Coifs. 2 HQ metal ring, 1 silver bar, 1 coif chain mail pattern , 1 flask of water, and smithy hammer. My cost was about 22pp each attempt. Sell back to vendor.
Note-From here I used steps 10 and 11. However, I realized afterwards that I could have gone straight to step 12. Step 12 uses less rings and costs less pp in my experience.
10. Optional - From 133 to 135 make Ornate Chain Leggings. 3 HQ metal rings, 1 silver bar, 1 leggings chain mail pattern, 1 flask of water, and smithy hammer. My cost was about 33 pp each attempt.
11. Optional - From 136 to 142 make Ornate Chain Mail. 3 HQ metal rings, 1 silver bar, 1 tunic chain mail pattern, 1 flask of water, and smithy hammer. My cost was about 34pp each attempt.
Note-Switch to gold at this point, sell your left over silver.
12. From 142 to 146 make Gold Ornate Chain Coifs. 2 HQ metal rings, 1 gold bar, 1 coif chain mail pattern, 1 flask of water, and smithy hammer. My cost was about 32 pp each attempt.
13. From 146 to 148 make Gold Ornate Chain Leggings. 3 HQ metal rings, 1 gold bar, 1 legging chain mail pattern, 1 flask of water, and smithy hammer. My cost was about 43 pp each attempt.
14. From 148 to 155 make Gold Ornate Mail. 3 HQ metal rings, 1 gold bar, 1 tunic chain mail pattern, 1 flask of water, and smithy hammer. My cost was about 44 pp each attempt.
Now you don’t have much choice. At least ONE component of further smithing must be farmed or player made. My choices are Fine steel plate (which requires leather padding from a tailor) or Acrylia armors (which require Acrylia ores which are not vendor sold that I can find).
I am going to end my post for the moment. I am at 155 and currently doing research to see which route will be cheaper and more cost effective. I have spent between 2k to 3k so far in smithing. Although a portion of it was due to the learning curve as an update had not been done in awhile.
One last token of thanks to Larien on Lanys T’Vyl, may others pick up the hammers and forge ahead brother. I hope that this knowledge will serve you better Brothers and Sisters of Norrath
