  • Call me crazy....

I got obsessive with smithing again.
I made it to 188, on a single day, about 30 combines to go from 184 (where I've been since may of 2001) to 188. Which shocked me greatly.

And on a future date and time, I will be attempting 100 Barbarian cultural combines, and 20+ Mistletoe Sickle combines for friends and such.

I'm filling requests for armor pieces this way, as well as some sickles, and hoping that I'll bank a significant number of skillups doing so. I'd really, REALLY like to break 200 with this run. I'm hedging my bets with the help of some friends, and I'll let y'all know what happens.

Incidentally, the cost incurred for this series of attempts will be about 75kpp. And based on the current market price, I'll be able to replace that cost with the items I succeed in making. My going success rate on high end barb cultural is 4 of 15 attempts. Anyway, wish me luck! Or donate a heap of BD's to my cause

      You're crazy.

You should also be posting this on your Server's specific board.

Considering the current sell price on Tarrew Marr for BD cultral, if its anything close to your servers... well it seems you will be flushing money down the drain.

I will even predict that you will get about 3 skill ups, from all that..... yes very crazy.

            Good luck but

Save your hard earned bds! I did my first cultural combines at 200 raw skill and did 2 bracers in 19 tries. I should have waited but I did it anyway, so I can kinda relate to your eagerness to combine the high end stuff... but... lol ya you are crazy

I got 1 in 20 BD successes between 200 and 205 skill, which is the 5% you would expect to get if your tried the combines at 0 skill. Unless BD's are extremely cheap on your server, you're just going to be wasting money and time, which you could be turning to profit if you just skill up more and do the combines later.

With 100 barbarian cultural combines, you might expect to get 5 1 BD items. If the prices are anything like what they are on AB, you're not going to make back half what you spent.

Cultural armour prices are dropping. You can't expect to get 30K for a breastplate anymore. A guy I was making a Crimson Darkscale breastplate for was sold a Fierce Heraldic breastplate for 10K, so that cut the market right out from under me. I also saw a Crimson Darkscale girdle in the bazaar for 4K, 1/4 the price I would have liked to ask for mine. With the new PoP armours coming onto the market, and more people doing Tae Ew recipes, I can see cultural dropping even further in value. It's now time for me to stop farming and start levelling again, so I can get my hands on those PoP components.

Do yourself and your budget a favor and stay away from BD cultural and mistletoe cutting sickles til your skill is over 220. If your goal is to MAKE these items, not just to skill on them, your success rate is going to be disastrous at 188.

You're neither crazy nor insane -- just delusional. :?

                    well

I DID do a sample batch of armor before I chose this path.

I made 15 attempts at BD cultural.
                    I had 4 successes. (That's what, 38% success rate?)
Sold them all that night for a heap more blue diamonds and plat.
Came out ahead in the bank.

Hmmm... That's not far off the success rate that a GM smith would get. I think the only answer is that you got very, very, (I'm tempted to just keep writing "very" at this point), lucky.

Although I just noticed, Barbarians don't seem to have a BD plate armour. Since the Darksplint ogre cultural is believed to have a significantly lower trivia than the Darkscale ogre cultural, it probably means that the barbarian ringmail is significantly easier than other races BD cultural plate, which is why you had such a high success rate. There's no point guessing from such a small survey, but a 40% success rate at 188 would suggest that the barb BD ringmail trivials around 290, compared to the estimated 350 of BD plate.

Then again, my success rates on Darksplint are no higher than my success rates on Darkscale...

                      All this is mere conjecture.

Just to illustrate the cruelty of the RNG, I got 6 out 16 successes on mistletoe cutters at skill 202-205. At 222 I am 1 for 6 - I know, too small a sample to draw any conclusions but still frustrating.

I tried mistletoe cutting sickles at 190 and did 40 combines with 2 successes and 1 skillup.
