  • Grandmaster Smith?

Finally dinged 200 in smithing tonight, and a guildie asked me if I was now a Grandmaster smith . . . and I don't know. At what point would *YOU* call yourself a GM smith? 200? 201? 250?

There's no concensus here. Some say 200 skill warrants GM, some say it's 201, others say it's 250. What do you personally think?

250 for me. I haven't looked at what it says in the skills list recently, but I'm pretty certain it still says Master at 201.

I believe it still says Master at 250 skill too

GM is something you decide for yourself when you want to call yourself - I personally still say "Master" at 232, but will ask someone what they want made if they are asking for a GM, in case I can help.

everyone has their own opion on master and grandmaster. in general any tradeskills above 101 to 200 is master. if you want you can make levels of master, ie...low master , mid master, high master. grandmaster is 201 to 250. its up to your server, your guild, you peers to dictate whats master and whats grandmaster. as for me personnaly, grandmaster is 201 but its low grandmaster. 225 can be mid grandmaster, 240 on up can be high grandmaster.
          thats my two copper.
if you want to check your language skills at 100 it says master.

Aye, the skills never say "Grand Master". There is only Master. GM is a made up term by the players for the players. My personal definition is (as someone above stated) 101-200 is Master. 201+ is Grand Master. 250 skill is a 250 Grand Master. Considering someone with a 222 skill +15% Skill item has the exact same effective skill as a 250 with the same +15% (or any other) skill item. It is really up to each person to determine what they call themselves, but that is my opinion.

Everyone is gonna callit as they see. I think everyone is a master from 200 on. I prefer the term Journeyman form 100-200. Your a Grandmaster when ya hit 250. Grandmaster, IMHO, is for those at the pinnacle, for those who have gone above and beyond the call. 200 is obviously not the pinnacle and 201 is just the first step to GM. Again it's what you feel is right and until Sony says otherwise, its our term to be bestowed how we feel.

You are a master smith until you hit 250.

Only at 250 actual, unmodified skill should you be called Grandmaster. I have a mod myself, but will never consider myself a GM smith until that skill reads 250, and neither should any of you.

Grandmaster is an honorific title that should be awarded only when you reach the pinicale of your craft.

If you are still skilling up...are you really a "Grandmaster"? Only when you cannot progess any further will you become a grandmaster. Now if you are a Trophied Grandmaster...that is something special.

                  Master smith...

In my opinion 200-201 is too low, but insisting on 250 in many of the skills (smithing and tailoring for instance) may be a tad harsh.

I'm a tad biased. I hit 242 smithing well before Luclin came out. Did over 120 combines before dinging from 242 to 243. The chilling thought in the back of my mind that I'd need 800-1k Earthen Tempers to reach 250 made me sick to my stomach.... (Thankfully, Brell fooled Tunare into giving us Mistletoe Cutting Sickles--she not realizing what a great benefit it was to those of us who look at trees as simply fuel for the forge. ;P)

In my opinion, anyone who gets to 230 in a skill is enough of a tradeskill nut or so that they are going to reach 250 eventually. They've made a "commitment." For those tradeskills that require huge amounts of component hunting--smithing, tailoring, tinkering, etc. (Jewelers and Brewers need not apply), I certainly wouldn't look askance at someone in the 230's who is actively pursuing 250 referring to themselves as a Grand Master.

Of course, if they respond to a tell in auction asking for a GM smith or whatever they should refer to themselves by skill, so the guy knows what they are getting...but I'd consider an active smith who has 235 + geerlock in smithing, for example, worthy of respect as a GM smith. It is as much a way of life as a skill number.

I personally feel it's 250, reguardless of what trade. If you want to call yourself a GM at less than that I don't agree with it, but if you call yourself a gm with anything less than a 252 modified skill you are doing a diservice to your customers (unless you just sell stuff you make, and don't do combines for people, then who cares right?). This isn't just about them though, it's about you. If you don't have the highest skill possible you will fail more combines, the worse your record is, the more potential damage you do to your reputaions...and therefore your business success.

I call myself a Grand Master (Junior Grade)

But if anyone asks for smithing help, I tell them my current skill level and the odds I will be able to make what they want - caveat emptor after that.

                              People respond to those? /boggle

I respond to calls for a GM Smith whenever I see one in the bazaar (250 raw skill). About 60 percent of the time it's someone who wants a combine, has a question, wants "ranger heraldic" or who knows what else. The rest of the time the person wants some armor made. I have made atleast 30-40 pieces over my career by answering these calls for help.

Over the last 4-5 months, I have helped hundreds of people make anything from skinning knives to heraldic and everything in between. Most people are amazed when I help them. I've heard countless times, "Wow, most GM tradeskillers won't talk to me." Or, "I've been looking for a GM xxx forever now," or even, "You're not like other GMs, they are usually rude to me."

I used to be all about making the plat. What I found out about myself is that plat really isn't that interesting. Making armor and social interaction is where all my fun comes from in EQ, so I make it a point to answer calls for help and ambassador my trade the best I can.
