  • Drunken Smithing

I'm a very poor dwarven smith (lvl 29 paladin on Venril Sathir) who's playing around with ornate chain and the occasional piece of fine plate (for my own armour only). My WIS is under 100 while my STR is 128 just now.

Given that smithing uses the highest of either STR or WIS, would it improve my chances if I got completely legless before attempting to do any expensive combines (I'm also a master brewer; well, you know us dwarves )

    Any ideas ?

Are you going for successes or for skillups?

      Old myth.

The highest of Str, Wis or Int determines if you'll get skill-ups.

      Only your skill determines success

So a Geerlok (or other such item) only affects your success rate.

      ----------------------------------

Now, there have been people who say that skill-ups come more often on successful combines than on unsuccessful ones... but no true hard evidence has backed this up, since very few people do low-success rate combines to skill-up.

I am a HIE Paladin smith, I can normally max out my str with a buf from my druid. I would suggest that you put together a smithing package, get as many +str items as you can.

        I use the following
        Moktar BP
        Runed Protector Arms
        Bracelet of Might
        Hero Bracer
        Gantru helm
        Velium Ruby Viel
        Moktar Greaves
        Thick Banded Belt

        And various other items....

For your level I would look for the most bang for the buck in Str... I am Thinking thick banded belt and Hero bracer, on Tunare both of these are relitively cheap now. Also a cracked Darkwood shield would be good.

        Good Luck

          Get it up

Pump up your stats. Save up money, and build a set of gear that ups your str as high as possible. Crustacean armor is pretty cheap on most servers now, and has a ton of str. Darkwood shield... don't dwarf work boots have good str on them? Get storm str or focus before doing smithing, as well. There's a huge difference in skillups from 100 to 150, and from 150 to 200. Those are the approximate ranges i've done multiple skills at. I also noticed a large difference between 189 and 255, as well. The higher you can get the stat, the better.

Angelsyn is correct. If you are hoping to improve your success rate then the only thing that you can do towards that end is to improve your skill. A higher STR will only improve your chance of getting a skill increase.

Getting drunk WILL help with smithing.

              Seriously! I am not kidding.

Getting plastered in Real Life will help ease the pain caused when going past 188 skill.

Just dont get SOOO drunk you combine a partial stack of components by mistake.

Since you are a strength-based smith, drunken smithing (decreasing int/wis but increasing strength) will help your chances of skill-ups. Dyarrig on Quellious demonstrated that pretty convincingly 1 1/2 - 2 years ago.

There's a pretty finite limit on how much drinking will improve your strength, though. It will be a bit of a boost, but won't get you to 255.

As several said, get a "strength suit" of gear you'll only wear for smithing (AC/HP won't matter - just + Str) and get Storm Strength from a friendly druid or strength buffs from a shammy before you smith.

If you're getting a strength buff, get harnessing of spirit, 49 shaman spell.

                  66 strength for 72 minutes.

Of course, if you're like me and you're an INT-based smith, drunken smithing would be a disaster.

STR smithing is fine but since I am into multiple tradeskills, I chose to go with INT for my tradeskilling.

Now as far as getting drunk in RL to take the edge off your failures -- given that I'm in the Terrible 190s in smithing, I will definitely have to keep that in mind.
