  • Wood Elf Smithing...

Hi all. I am currently working on smithing so that I can attempt the combines for my 8th shawl. My smithing skill is currently 116 and I am pondering my path forward.

What I'm considering is doing the Fier'Dal Fletching kits as they trivial at 163 and everthing can be purchased from a vendor. What I'm wondering is if this will be cost prohibitive? Are there any other reasons why I might not want to go this route? Can anyone who has tried these give me an idea?

They are containers, and unless you have a lot of open main inventory slots, you will either need to sell often, or drop a lot of them on the floor.

      From the Wood ELf Cultural Page we have;

      Feir'dal fletching kit

small brick mithril 0.500 (NOTE: This price is not listed, I am going high b/c I figure this will give a better picture of cost)
      hinge mold 0.010
      container base mold 0.115
      container lid mold 0.115
      water flask 0.010

      Goes trivial at 163 Smithing
Makes a 10-slot container, wt 1.0, hold Large items

So per combine it's about 0.750, so if I am right on the cost of the Small Brick of Mithril then it ~1pp per combine, or ~20pp per stack. Like said before, it's a container so you will loss space very fast, but fill up your bank with them, drop a bunch on the ground then sell, pick up what you can and sell again, I did that during pottery and it worked just fine. This is not a bad way to raise skill for Wood Elfs, and you can keep one for Cultural Fletching even!

Only trouble is a small brick of mithril is prolly 6pp each. Large bricks of mithril are 18pp each, and blocks are 55pp each (or so depending on faction). So 1pp each per skill attempt is not correct. Embroidery needles are less than 5pp per attempt to 122, then its either these, chain, or plate unless you have a bottomless supply of velium.

I did the kits from 135 to 162 and I don't regret it at all. I could save my padding for fine plate and the losses in money from the kits was only a few hundred pp. The only thing that annoyed me was that nothing stacked so I had 4 backpacks open for 10 attempts. I would just make them and /ooc to GFay that free kits were littering the area around the cultural forge. (Warning: if you do this you will have many tells asking you where the forge is! Hehe)

            Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I had found another thread in here regarding the embroidering needles so I started them last night. They were definitely the way to go. I did about a stack and a quarter of them and it got me to their trivial of 122. I saved all my successes and then went fishing in Ak'anon for the Clockwork Koi. So far I've attempted 11 of the Cultural needles and am at a skill of 127 now (these sell back to the vendor for approximately 9.5pp, btw!). I have enough embroidering needles left for 13 more attempts and I'm hoping that will take me to their trivial of 132. Oh, and during that time I skilled up a point in tailoring (166) from two combines of velium hound fur , fishing up to 154 and alchohol tolerance up to 169 (hugs his Fisherman's Companion!).

I am then definitely going to do the Fletching kits til 163 as 6 or 7 pp per attempt will be cheaper (and less time consuming) than trying to buy or farm all the leather padding I will need for the fine plate.

            Again, thanks for the information!

Update: I have trivialed on the cultural needles and have started work on the fletching kits. Yes, they are a pain since 4 of the ingredients needed are not stackable and you have to get the ore from Felewithe but what I am doing is loading up on the ore - leaving just 4 spaces open - one for the stack of water and one for each of the three molds needed (hinge, lid and bottom). In Kelethin the vendor who sells the molds is not that far from the cultural forge so I just keep running back and forth between it and him until I've used up all the ore. I may bind by the vendor so the trip back from Felewithe will be quicker as well.

137 skill now and climbing rather quickly. Thanks again for all the info.

I am now at 162 in smithing and will be starting on the fine steel plate combines next. I got a great tip from a guild mate regarding the leather padding which I want to pass on to all of you. The place to go is Marus Seru. It's off of the Neterbian lair zone (to the right once you come to that big central pillar) and you will be hunting Greyhoppers. They are fairly low level and frequently drop Low Quality Rockhopper hides. It took me approximately 2 hours to farm 4 stacks of them plus about another 2 hours or so in Shadeweaver Thicket to farm the shadeling silk needed to make the leather padding.

                Good luck all!

FYI ( and please correct me if I am wrong) I checked the tailoring recipe and it states:

*or* shade silk thread (or silk thread), low quality rockhopper hide
So you can use normal spierling silk ( I usually vendor buy this as I cant bebothered to hunt the lil suckers)

And thank you for the Flecthing kit idea. I am currently at 126 and was wondering what to do next. The ironic thing is I made one of these back at 122 when I needed my Wood Elf to make a Blessed Faydark Stinger. So hopefully a few hundred palt and Ill hit the 160s tonight.

Actually Loth, you are correct. You can now use the regular spiderling silk as well as the shadeling silk for the rockhopper hides. I had a guild mate point this out to me just the other day. I did not check this at the time as I had remembered the recipe from a while ago so I naturally just thought that only the shadeling still worked. Oh well, I am done with fine plate for now as I got my skill up to 178 on those 4 stacks of padding.
