  • What is the correct skill to announce ?

If you are skill level 238 and have a gearlock +5 skill modifier , does that make your skill 250 , and if you are 250 , does using a skill modifier help any? If someone asks for a 250 skilled Smith , and Im 240 with a 5% modifier , how should I respond ?

    Thanks
    Steve

The modified skill cap is 255.

Best is to announce 240 + 5%, at least its the most honest.

Ask them what they need made. If you can and will make it, say so.

238 plus geerlok is just about max mod anyway, so it's not like there's anyone that has a noticably higher chance to make anything anyway.

If someone is asking for a GM smith, I always ask them what they need made. If it's something I have experience making, I let them know, and tell them my skill (I say 224 skill plus geerlok, so 235 effective) and my expected success rate based on my experience.

I would never say I have 235 skill when I in fact only have 224 skill and the 5% from my geerlok, but I do know others that say it that way.

The modified skill cap is actually 252 (from the FAQ), so with 240 + geerlok, you can't get any better. I wouldn't call myself a GM smith at that point, but I would tell people asking for a GM that I could do the combine as a GM smith.

Bits (or basically one byte of information)

Skill is kept in an 8 bit field, which can represent the integers from 0 to 255. EQ kept the 253, 254, and 255 values reserved for special cases, like if you haven't trained the skill. I forget what the other two represent.

Very rarely do people want to know your actual skill level if they are looking for someone to do a combine for them. In those cases I say I am 252.

If a friend or someone random is asking me my skill level because I just dinged a point and they merely want to know, I say '220 plus 15%, effective skill 252'. I don't try to power my skill up any more, because I know I will get there eventually..;-)
