Ok heres the situation. I am now at 247 in smithing .... yes I know im really feelin it at this point ... sooooooo close. Anyway, ive scrounged up which is what I hope to be is the last batch of shriekings I will ever have to see in my life BUT ( and those who know how the situation in Hollowshade can be with getting owlbears to the south ) wouldnt you know it with this last batch of wailings every time the zone gets reset someone is always allowing the bears to get wiped really really quick. So my question is are there only the 2 owlbears plus Yelloweyes down in the other camp OR is there actually a camp of 4 owlbears which I thought I read on this board at one time making that camp plus the 2 actually 6 plus of course Yelloweyes?

Owlbears in Paludal

There are 8 owlbears in Paludal Caverns, there is a cave with 4, a cave with 2, Yelloweyes and one in the pool around the Rieshicyben. The one in the pool is a placeholder for a named called Minnowgulper.
The drop rate for wailings in PC isn't too bad but spawn rates are a little slow and the place is probably the single most overcamped zone in EQ. You would probably be better off finding the 4 spawn cave and settling in unless you play duning odd hours. Every time I leave that cave there seems to be someone who wants it for themselves.

The loc is aprox -2000, 400. Take a book with you
It might not be someone wiping out the owlbears in HM, it could well be the bug I reported a couple of weeks ago, where the owlbears were being defeated by the grimlings even tho the sonic wolves were the ones attacking, and no player was helping the attackers.
I think the problem is that Grimling attackers were getting stuck behind trees/rocks during their attack, and not despawning when the sonic wolves made their attack. The owlbears that defend against Grimlings were despawning and being replaced with owlbears that defend against sonics, so when a lone Grimling attacker finnlly got around its rock, it was able to just walk right through the owlbear defenders and take the camp.Kradlum O'Kradlum

I have only found 7 owl bears in PC.
4 are in a room near Hollowshade. Its a dead end room off near the zone. 2 are in a dead end off the main lake from Shadow Haven, across the bridge most people take on the way to Shadeweavers. The 7th is the named, which I've rarely seen, and never seen drop the stuff.
I really don't like SS armor as a way to skill up, its just.. well. I don't like it. But if you're pressed for cash, and can figure out how to work the HS war better than me, its probably a good way to go, especially now that the Shadows aren't no-rent

I generally get 1-2 wailing substance (usually 2) per round of 4 grimy owlbear cubs in the Paludal camp. Be sure to root, dark, or snare (don't recall your class) if you can because they are runners and it's a pain if you don't kill them quickly for some reason.
They take awhile to spawn (12 or 20 minutes, don't recall which) so bring a book. And yes, it is overcamped and only 1 can really sit on the camp at a time. I don't do this camp anymore; I wait for the owlbears to appear in the southern islands. Haven't had any problems there.

I just checked into these last night for the first time.
I went to the 2 spawn last night. The spawn rate was 12 minutes, and I waited through 7 cycles to get FOUR freaking substance!!! I just wanted four to finish my humming luclinite hammer (one extra in case of failure)
I checked Hollowshade before I went to Paludal, and Wolves owned the whole zone!
Keep in mind, I was on a 26 dwarven cleric, my 201 dwarven blacksmith. I gotta put on some levels, cause farming just isn't really possible in Hollowshade. The Owlbears in Paludal were OK, even the ravenous ones are dark blue to 26, but Hollowshade is downright dangerous for me.
My question is, do the various wailing and shreiking substance drop off ANY of the right type of monster in the zone? Why is everyone so intent on getting the creature they want to the south island camps anyway?Balkin Ironfist (Ominous Deeds)

I have never, EVER gotten a wailing substance drop from any owlbear in Hollowshade other than on those southern islands. I have not gotten one in the northern caves, wandering around, in the Grimling chieftain's camp. I have killed many owlbears all over Hollowshade and never gotten a single wailing substance except from owlbears occupying the southern islands. I have spent some time camping in the northern caves for the boss drops so I have killed many owlbears.
I have gotten shrieking substance from wolves in Hollowshade other than on the southern islands, but only off sonic wolflings and only rarely (about 1 in 9). It drops much more plentifully off the sonic wolves on the southern islands and drops all types there. Of course it also drops off dire sonic wolves in TM.

I too have begun to believe the bugs in the war extend to grimlings taking over the owlbear caves soon after a repop unless you babysit the war and make sure any grimling attackers are killed even if they're attacking the wolves. There is a reason for people to get grimlings into the owlbear caves, but I've yet to see anyone farming the buggy spawns inside there, so I really doubt that people are actively helping the grimlings.
The war really needs careful nursing to get the owlbears into the south, which is why it annoys me when a GM sneaks in and repops when they're finally there.

People do help the grimlings take the owlbear cave occaisionally for an AC 10 11% haste belt with some nice stats. Not many haste items with good stats farmable by a level 40.
It's nodrop so it has to be farmed by the one who wants it thus everytime someone wants one belt you get a grimling owned zone for a month (or till a kind GM will come and help).
