  • I am an Erudite...And a smithee

    Hello all =)
Long ago, i got myself to 175 smithing using banded armor, then i let my skill lie dormant for a logn long while. Recently i have began working on it again and have a skill of 188, and am farming shadow scream (just fill my 10slot BP with Swirling shadows)
What i am wondering is it worth while getting to 240 as an Erudite smith.
I know erudite cultural is Tailor made so thats out(until i master smithing and have the bank account for Tailoring) but what other things are there that require a good smith like that, that might turn me a decent profit eheh. I'm hoping to make enough cash off smithing to allow me to progress in tailoring....eventulylol

Like everything else, its all about timing.

I am Erudite w/ a skill of 197 in smithing which I attained pre nerf. I havent attempted to skill my Erudite up one point.

My Ogre was 242 pre nerf. I gained 8 points to 250 post May whatever doing orders strictly.

Now, Im saying this because if you read any other post about making money in smithing, you will see a common theme.

You also have the negative of not having any cultural market with your skilling.

So, as it stands, the smithing market with no cultural to sell is as diluted as the cultural market.

Black Acrylia isnt worth the hassle.

Mistletoe Sickles might present a expensive store bought way to skill - but talk about a diluted market. Sickles can sit on a bazaar mule for days before someone needs one for their 3rd twink`s cousin.

Sheets of Ethereal Energy isnt a option. Anyone who needs them certainly knows someone who can make them for them.

Tae Ew armor & weapons is possibly still a money maker, but not for long. When they changed the drop rate on the blood was when you made serious money, and shortly after. At present, anyone who is a smith on any server has sold some and made tons for friends. And if you cant do the farming of the blood yourself, then forget it, people are gouging in the bazaar when selling the blood from what Ive seen.

PoP smithing - well anything that is accessible in tier 1 - 3 has better alternatives in most cases pre PoP. Cultural prices have dropped so far because of the abundance in blue diamonds that anything w/ Night Terror in its name isnt even worth trying to sell for the pain in the ass that it represents. Hurricane is also a bit more difficult then NT w/ having to be BoT flagged and scrounging for Drops of Pure Rain. At present, PoP smithing is worthless unless you are in a Tier 4 guild farming the elemental planes. And I imagine even those guilds are still outfitting their memebers to some extent still with those tradeskill drops. I have seen some elemental bows for sale on our server for outrageous prices. We have one guild in the elementals, and they seem to think 350K to 750k is a fair price to ask for the earth bow.

Shadow Scream has a small froggy twink market - but that wont last long.

Acrylia armor is a hassle attaining windstones coupled with the fact that the market for this is limited to twinks & low time played main char`s who dont have pp anyways.

I guess what Im saying is at one point, all of these presented a way to make money. But most of them at present are a dieing market at best. Currently the only market I see to make money would be the 4th tier tradeskills, and that is limited to a select few.

So, if your farming smithing to make money to fund your tailoring, why not just farm tailoring to begin with? If the plan is to farm smithing to make 100`s of 1000`s of platinum that it will take to fund tailoring, well lets just say its going to be overly difficult.

The smiths who made the most money were the ones who were first to market with items and the ones shortly after. Everyone else played second fiddle and the ones who are just entering the market are probably seeing just enough of the action to continue their skilling and to buy a few new toys and put a few plats in their pockets, if that.

Now servers may vary but I dont imagine by much. Be prepared to be disappointed is all I can say. BTW, I play on D-Ro. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for the reply.
I shouldn't have said i wanted to fund my tailoring, that would just be a nice side effect.
Essensialy i'm in a low end guild thats poor in Raid power but high in tradeskills. We have a couple GM smiths some JCers and the like. Anyway i've become kind of bored with level so i set upon the task of mastering both Smithing and Tailoring. So that i willl be able to produce some Interesting and usefull items, if only to help guildmates.
Your answer is pretty clear. I wont make much money off this as i dont have smithing cultural and rest of the items are if not worthless, unwanted.
I am not going to let the detter me from my quest, but its a bit of a let down
Thanks a lot for the answer it has been most helpfull

I certainly dont want to deter you. I just dont want you to have false visions of wealth in your head. Again, if you were a smith in the 220+ range pre nerf, you would have made millions of plat if you pursued it.

Today, if you dont see opportunity and jump on it right away, then you may as well not bother. Smiths are getting to be abundant, hell many do combines on my server for non smiths who gather components and then sell the finished product. They also undercut each other and destroy a market within weeks. Tae Ew Chain is a great example. Talk about great gear that flooded the market within days...

If you take the approach of gearing yourself and friends from your work, then you cant possibly be let down. If along the way, you stumble upon a market or money maker, then you will be pleasantly surprised.

No matter what ya choose to do, the path`s arent easy and I wish you lots of luck.

          Price wars are great....

On Tribunal you can typically sell sickles for 1700pp most days.
Except when a new smith is powerskilling and dumps 20 for 1000pp each on a mule.

This tends to make me undercut them just as a big "well F.U. then".

Normally, however it is not that bad. There are some nice smiths that do not under cut me unless I start it first (/wave Duho & Ruddipoo).
Most days we match each others prices and leave it at that.
But then along comes someone who drops their price a hundred plat or so for a fast sale and it sets off a chain reaction

HOURS of fun. However I do hear that some servers the sickle markets are totally busted.

I only need 8 more pts til max modified skill so I may not bother with sickles after that, though at 1700pp each I can make quite a tidy profit atm!
