Ok, I just went through 80 combines at 238 without a skillup on Shadowscream which isnt a surprise in itself but I used to get at least a couple points for that amount. I am currently making boots and I was wondering if I switched to tunics if I would get "better" results?

When Skilling, I always prefer to work on the combine that is nearest my skill level (tunic > 244, boots == 248), but I can offer no hard evidence that is going to net you more skill ups.
I also like to change recipies myself, if I go to long without a skill up, about 40 for me. Since both recipies use two shadows you don't have anything to lose.
