    hey folks,

I have read through all the guides and want to try out smithing, but have a few questions.

    1. How much initial money should I have saved?

    2. Are there items along the way in skill I can make to sell and make profit on while I am gathering my supplies and working my skill?

    3. What race/class is best for this - I was planning on using my High Elf Cleric with 204 wis, think this would be a good idea?

Any help would be appreciated - thank you.

1: Captial: To get you to 188 = 4k, To get from 188-242 = Depends on which route you take.

2: Save: Spiderling/Shadeling Silk, Any Quality of Cat, Bear, Rockhopper, and Wolf Pelts. Save any FS to turn into HQ Ore. Save any Windstones and Acrylia blocks/bricks.

3: Best Race: Depends on which BD you want to do.

      nother quest

Thanks for that info Sinnyen - can someone give me a run down of the races and what would make them better/worse for a blacksmith? Or should you try to go unique and do something different since the major races would have already been taken?

Cruise the cultural armor stats pages and check out which classes/races can wear which armor.

I.e. Barbarian Cultural plate is only wearable by Tribunal following Barb/Human/Half-Elf Warriors and Bards.
Dwarf cultural plate is wearable by dwarves/halfings/etc Clerics/Warriors/etc

I believe Human smiths have it the best as they can make armor for LOTS of different Deities.

It sucks that most Barbarian Warriors follow Rallos Zek BUT my barbarian smith CAN'T make armor that they can wear.
BUT Human smiths CAN /boggle /sigh.

You don't need to follow a deity to make armor for them. You only need to be the right race.

Regardless of what race you chose, you can smith other stuff like Tae Ew shields and armor that sells really well. As well as PoP armors.

Also try to see how many of each race smith is on your server. This will determine the market for cultural armor.

Also it WILL take a long time to get to GM Smith level without unlimited funds.

As far as races go, the major advantage one race has over another in smithing is that for four races, cultural smithing is a viable skill-up option for the dreaded post 188 smithing. Those are dark elf, dwarven, human, and ogre. The other races either have no cultural smithing, or no good "bridge"; their cultural armor is either well below 188 or is a 250+ and nothing in between. Trolls have a theoretical bridge but it's not very practical.

High elven cultural also has a bridge, but the problem is with the cultural temper. Morning dew is foraged, there are no high elven foraging classes, and it's expensive and hard to come by. Major bottleneck prevents it from being a good skilling path.

Money: save as much as you can. More money = less time farming. You also need to think about whether you want to purchase supplies in the bazaar, or would rather farm them yourself. And if you do go shopping, look around for a while to see where prices are. You'll quickly catch on to what are "good" buys, and who the gougers are. An earlier post said 4K was a good starting amount, and that sounds about right.

Race: First, can you wear your own race's plate armor? If so, it might be nice to be able to equip yourself. Second, look at BD stats, and decide which one you want to make. Don't try to go to the Bazaar and see what's on sale, because by the time you get to that skill level, the market could look completely different. Third, understand that cultural armor is currently very race restricted in who can wear it. The one exception that I know of is humans, who can make armor that any Rallos Zek warrior can wear. Fourth, look at each race's intermediate (190-240) path to increase skill. I know that humans have a relatively easy progression compared to other races.

Depening on your server, it may be a long, long time before you are making anything that has a player market demand for it. You may find people willing to buy banded or fine steel off you, but do not count on this to fund your trade.

Finally, spend some time looking at all the smithing recipes, including the PoTC items, and plan your skillup path. The PoTC smithing recipes contain all vendor bought items, and so you can make a great amount of progression just doing those items. And you may find a small market for them, as well.

            Good luck!

Thanks for the help so far - helped me out greatly in deciding what path I think I want to do, below is what I am planning:

Go with a human bard for heraldic armor. This armor looked cool and even if other people make it should have a larger market. Make a bard for the speed song so I can run around where I need to go etc... Looks like I might as well raise some of my other skills too like tailoring and brewing to make whatever I need - so will be working on those to get them to the levels I need them at.

As far as my smithing path, just follow the guides through the lower skill levels and work my way up any way I can to get to 188. I could possibly get my guild to help me out with some money, which would be nice. After 188 I can farm the shadowscream armor components with my 63 beastlord, especially now that the swirling shadows isn't no rent.

How does the strategy sound? Any questions or comments? Any help you can give me would be greatly appeciated, going to need all I can get!

Just one. Even though the shadows aren't no rent any more, the other two items are still no drop.

So you're gonna have to rais your BL's smithing up quite a bit, if you want to farm the Shadowscream stuff, cause you'll have to do the initial combines, and transfer the (unstackable) orbs.

Ok thanks for the info Xaanru - what skill would I need with my BL to convert the substances? If I have to my friend can help and I can just run my bard there but I would rather be self-sufficient.

The humming orbs for Shadowscream armor are trivial at 168. And as Xaanru mentioned, they are not stackable.

168 arg.....guess my best bet just to level my bard up to where he can farm the substances himself effectively.

I'd recommend Human Freeport cultural as opposed to the Shadowscream. Unless you have no specific timeline for GM status in smithing.

At 173, I started smithing fine steel plate, trying to do combines 20-25 points above my skill level. Now at 185, I'm doing combines on Imbued plate (trivial 215-242)

As long as I have STR buffs (and KEI helps) to keep my STR at 255, I have a very good success rate and skillup rate on stuff 30 above trivial.

A lot of it is about time. And money. If you have 5-10K, you can skill up much quicker by buying leather paddings in the Bazaar for 15-20pp per padding, and can either farm or buy the Mugs of Sea Foam/Saltwater Seaweed that you need to make the tempers.

This requires a brewing skill minimum 135 to brew the tempers.

So I guess you have to decide which is more important. Your time or your money. For example, I spent 2 whole days with my 51 Wizzy farming pelts and spiderling silks for padding and Sea Foam and Seaweed for the tempers. 2 days of farming for 16 attempts.

However, I saved myself about 500pp by doing this. I have the plat in the bank to avoid this, and proved to myself that I'd rather spend money than time.

Great - thanks for the post I really am considering this. Almost at brewing 135 so that won't be a problem - the mugs of sea foam and saltwater seaweed do you know where to farm these?

How much money are you using for your skillups and are you able to sell this armor to vendors or in the bazaar to get a percentage back?

Sorry if these are n00b questions but I am very new at this and gathering as much information as possible.

                            Re_

                            Hi there,

I currently have a 250 Human Cleric Smithy on Zeb. If I were to make a character to simply skill up in smithing, I would definitely make an Erollisi Marr Human Cleric. Why you ask? Human's have a fairly easy (1 year almost full time) path to GM, much easier than some other races for sure. Why Erollisi Marr? Because for Imbued Field Plate you will need hundreds and hundreds of imbued gems (which do not add a red cent to the vendor sell-back value) and Rose Quartz is the EM Imbue. Can't remember exactly how much they cost, somewhere around a plat and a half. I easily threw away thousands of plat as my gems, opals, cost me around 18 plat each. If money is not a huge concern, I would highly recommend (post 188) sitting on the dock in OOT and fishing up your seaweed while throwing out "WTB Mugs of Seafoam!" messages. I bought all mine for free-10plat each. On a good day, I would walk away with 100-150 mugs.

As far as the market on smithed goods....On my server even Acrylia plate doesn't sell that good anymore. You shouldn't plan on making any money until you break 200-220. Then maybe sickles, heraldic, etc.

From 0-250 cost me somewhere around 100k before all was said and done. But I've made 500k easy since then, not counting all the armor I've made for myself and friends.

                            Good Luck to you,
                            ~Fallwell

Whatever race or class you chose, get your STR or WIS up to 255. Ths skillups come alot faster that way.
