• When should i start the cultural?

My smithing is about 190 right now and I'm at the point where I'm not rich, I can afford about 10k to burn I guess if need be if it was a worthy investment (meaning I would start seeing good results with the successes and skills). I can make the tempers for the armor. Should I start making cultural now or do shadowscream till ??? lvl and then start on cultural. It's for the tribunal stuff. Would appreciate any good info on when to start. Thanks much.

People have reported successes, but I'm not sure I would bother. With only 10k, you're not going to be able to make many pieces. The common advice seems to be to do SS to 210, then if you have a Geerlok to do EE bricks to 212. From that point on you can do sickles or Cultural. I'm in the same range as you myself, and am doing a combination of Shadowscream and old world human cultural.

You need to consider, that at 190 obviously a high fail rate (over time at the very least) is going to kick in.

Also, how hard are your tempers, and so on. If you can assemble all the bits and pieces and find it trivial to do so. Then its only cash.

But if you find it time consuming and even hard to do so, you will most likely be thinking, I don't want to just blow away all this effort....

When you say "the cultural," I assume you mean the new, BD cultural?

190 is fine for OLD style cultural. As a human smith, I use the stuff to skill up. Just bought 168 sea foams in bazaar for 7pp each this morning. looks like I get to fish this weekend. )

The BD cultural, from what I hear, will only give 5% success rates until after you break 210+geerlok, then will rise at 1% per point. BD's are cheaper now, so depending on the price of your cultural, this might still be profitable. Depends on race, and market for your armor. on Rodcet, the Heraldic BP still sells for 30k. The Brellium BP was recently for sale for 9999pp.

In the first case, you could still make a profit at 5%, though the risk of 100% fails is high. On the brellium, you'd lose money.Depends on your server economy.

I tried my first BD cultural at 200 + geerlok, did 2 bracers in 19 combines. I think I should have waited untill later. 212 as someone mentioned is a pretty sensible skill to start at. For instance I did legs in 2 tries at 212 and I seem to remember reading someone made legs in one try at 212 even though combines like those are lucky shots.

My advice to you is to save all your precious cultural ingredients.

            Another question please

Ok, sounds like a decent plan. I don't want to just blow a wad of cash when I can do the scream armor. A couple of you mentioned Old World Cultural armor. Looking at the cultural recipes, as below for example, both of these require a BD. Did barbarians have Old World and if so, what is it called/where is recipe? I just started smithing a few weeks ago and still learning, so I appreciate the advice and info you all are giving.

Also, if you look at the two recipes below, it mentions infused medium quality rings and then the next recipe infused rings. Am I to assume, that the Helanic recipe just took it for granted and that it is also infused medium quality rings or is there a different type of infused ring?

Artificer's Ringmail - Tribunal NEW smithy hammer, appropriate piece large patchwork/tattered armor, frost temper, appropriate large chainmail pattern, appropriate number of infused medium quality rings, imbued ivory

Helanic Tundra Armor (Tribunal-only) NEW medium quality chain jointing, leather padding, frost temper, imbued ivory, smithy hammer, large plate armor mold, appropriate number of infused rings

            Thanks again.

Ahhh, great ok you are a Barbarian, that helps to know. (p.s always good to post your race most times, as it helps people track down what you can or can't work on).

Old World Cultral, when someone refers to this i always think of non-BD cultral (or pre-BD cultral hence Old World). That said your Old World Cultral would be the Northman line of armours and weopons. Many people just call it Old Cultral.

The other recipies that use BD's are the new cultral, people will refer to them as BD cultral in most cases.

As you most likely learned, Old Cultral will not provide a skill up path. So that leaves Shadowscream and the odd bit of Acrylia.

The infused rings question I will leave to a Barb Smith to answer, but it looks like someone simply forgot to enter the medium for a few entries....

i can tell you for certain that "Infused medium quality rings" are used for both the ringmail for rogues/shamans and the plate combines as well.
