There are many things you can do in EQ which will yeild a better return on investment than any tradeskill (if your goal is plat profit):
    Selling summoned focus items

    Thats too funny.

      No it's not profitable
just let the existing 250 smiths be
no need to cut into their market, nope nope
/suffocates in a pool of pp

Heh, anyhow, it costs a ton up front to get to the profit point, but after that... wow. I'm stinking rich, like really rich. I've made maybe 750k-1mil in gear and pp since I started heraldic armor. Probably spent 40k up front to get my skill high enough.

One thing that most people miss is that many smiths do other things besides tradeskills. My character, Stilts, is a dwarven warrior and my main character.

I am also the the primary raid leader/organizer for my guild (Me: Okay, today, we're going to Cazic Thule... Yes, again...). Occasionally, I will MA for raids. I smith during "downtime". It's a hobby. I'm sure I've sunk 10's of K in plat in to tradeskills, but I still have very decent gear for my level.

The people that are eternaly broke are the ones doing it too fast, IMO. Yes, you can make a profit smithing, but you can make money faster and far more reliably in someplace like Seb. I smith so I can gear up myself and my friends. Skill-up runs and extra combines ("What do you mean, you wanted that imbued?") on Cultural plate go on the Merchant_Mule that I post in the bazaar on occasion. Shadowscream is either vendored or giving to alts and/or newbies that happen to be near the forge.

Trying to make a good profit anymore is all about timing. You have to be available when the power-smithers and the Economics 101 drop-outs aren't on. It can be done, but not as easily as it once could. It's far easier (and less frustrating) to just smith when you have the time and money. Get the skill ups when you can.

Hey... If you guys can... I have a pally with only a little of his newbie armor... And well... He's gonna be my second main... And um...

I wonder what the mareket is like on my server, which is tunare. I think I might make my paladin a blacksmith. Lol, but hey, if any of you are on tunare and can spare some armor... Hey, I'm always there! Lol

Anyway, I think my paladin will be the Blacksmith, it only seems more appropriate. But I need to lvl him up first. lol
