Ok, we're up to our eyeballs in Soapstones, and have enough ice to make a few attempts at some decent Farwater mail, but we seriously lack the fish gills. Has anybody found a particularly worthwhile area in Water to farm for the gills? Spent hours an hours today killing fishies by the zone in and only netted one gill. Am I wrong in assuming that there is a more fruitful place, or is VI just really that cruel when it comes to the Water drops? Then again, Metallic Substance isn't a whole lot easier, so I shouldn't be suprised.

Re: Shimmering Fish Gills
I've only seen four or five of these drop so far. Most have come off barracuda and other fish near the zone in, but one that we got last weekend came off either a greater kraken or anglerfish down deeper. My guild doesn't really kill for XP or tradeskill items that deep, so I don't have sufficient sample size to predict if the drop rate will be better deeper. It's worth a shot, though - at least you can pull hraquis down there. And don't forget to bring a silk-class alt for the sleeves!

fishgills is pretty rare, just like one of the smithing components for other zones. So far, since Jan. 12 (the day we killed RZ), we've scored total 12 gills. They all drop from the fish (near zone in or whatever comes when we pull names).
2 pair farwater scale leggings and 1 farwater scale bracer made.
failed 2 farwater scale leggings combine too

I am going to express a different experience here. I find we get plenty of gills. Right now I need more soapstones in order to make a few more pieces. It seemed like recently the drop rate of ice (metal) went up and soapstones went down. Of all 4 planes, water seems to be the most balanced. You can farm the hraquis and then you will get low on gills. Only raid and you will have an abundance of gills. Every time we do Wise, we get a lot of gills.

I have gotten a handful of the fishgills and so far as I can tell they only drop off the traps in the zone that spawn mini versions of regular mobs. Tiny little frogs, fish, turtles, etc....and I do mean tiny! I have not gotten shimmering gills off of any regular mobs as of yet, but that doesn't mean regular mobs don't drop them. However, I DO know that I've gotten at least 1 fishgill per trap that was spawned. If you move around alot, you'll see a message when you spring the traps and there will be anywhere from 2-4 little tiny critters that will attack.

gills
I have gotten shimmering fishgills off the trap mobs (turtles, but heard they are more common of trap spawned baracudas), off A Greater Anglerfish (once... in about 100 kills of them), and off Great White and Hammerhead sharks. Baracuda have them in their loot table but the highest drop rate seems to be off sharks... any kind.

Been exping in water alot lately. Mostly in the Hyraqui, Regura area, but since I learned angerfish also drop gills pulling quite a bit from the cave Hydrotha spawns in.
I've netted 3 gills. 1 I don't remember (was more focused on Ice at that point), 1 from a shark near ent, and 1 from an anglerfish.
Last night I decided to focus on sharks and went in to one of the shark caves on the left side. Cleared it + roamers + tunnel statics. Not one gill.
Clearing the Hydrotha cave is annoying because spawns can be either kracken or anglerfish and lately I'd been getting alot more kracken (no eyes tho).
Tried the fishlord ring (1 group) and got owned within seconds. Gonna try it again with 2 groups soon.
It's nice that they up'd the other drops (my first 3 trips to the Hyraqui area netted 2 silk 1 soap in about 8 hrs of camping), but the gills need an update.

I'm thinking that means they drop off sharks well.
Have had them drop off turtles (much to my surprise) around zone in.
Best way to get them was offer 7K each and wait...got 8 in 1 day that way.
Now if I could just either 1) make the frogs give up oil more or 2) speed up their spawn I would be happy..;-/

With the way you are all talking it makes it sound like they aren't that rare.
The prices people sell them at though say otherwise - 20 to 25k each.
I have only seen 2 for sale since the beginning of PoP.
I bought one for 20k and saw another last night for 25k which I can no longer afford.Rendael Brigh, Lord Protector

They aren't that rare. The problem is there is only one raid target where they drop (Wise) and every other raid target is way deep in. And since the desire level to XP in water is similar to the desire level to slam ones hand in a door, they don't enter the world very quickly.
I have purchased some in the bazaar for 5-7K, and have more than I need currently. What I need is Ice. Went on a prolonged killing spree deep, gots tons of everything, and one ice. Made me very sad..;-/
