  • Fine steel conversion = false economy

I never converted FS and never would. Here is why:

My favorite FS hunting place is Highhold Keep guards. Guards drop FS short swords that sell for about 5.5pp each.

I COULD melt them down to convert them to high quality ore, but I get nothing but a small brick each. It takes 3 small bricks plus 1 water to make 1 large brick needed to make 2 rings. Given the expected 5% loss, on average you are going to fail 1 out of every 20 attempts to make a large brick from 3 small bricks. So, statistically, you are going to need to melt down 63 FS short swords to make 20 large bricks (20x3, plus an extra 3 for the 1 out of 20 small-to-large-brick conversion failure).

Had you sold those 63 FS swords, you would have gotten about 346.5pp.

Guess what? For 346.5pp, you could BUY 19 large bricks of HQ ore, and only have to invest a few more plat extra to buy number 20. No dragging FS to forges, no conversions to screw up, no small brick to large brick conversions, just 19 lovely large bricks ready to get carved up into rings.

In the case of HHK guard farming, there is no forge at HHK, so I would have to drag the heavy swords to a forge somewhere to convert. It is far easier to sell them right at HHK (there is an erudite merchant who will sell even when you are hopelessly KOS there); as a shadowknight I can even FD bank there.

And short swords are among the least profitable of those weapons that convert to only 1 small brick; many weapons that sell for more only yield that much.

Farm fine steel for plat to buy ore, not to convert into ore.

I came to the same conclusion myself... it's just not really worthwhile to do conversions.. sure it does cost less... but not -much-

Plus, just go downstairs for a little bit and whack some goblins, who have some decent selling items as well, for bricks of unrefined ore before going back to your favorite HQ ore vendor (The goblins also drop HQ ore bricks sometimes, too) .... in a pinch the vendors usually have lots of bricks for sale, too.

I'm a Vah Shir Beastlord so I can sell to any of thge vendors in HHK with sneak and can bank even when the banker is KOS to me, oddly enough (I just gotta be careful not to aggro Ran up above)

Once upon a time, the HQ ore vendors would get bought out pretty regularly... so it was pretty useful to melt down weapons.

Now, very few people bother to make Ornate Chain for skill-ups... so it's not so important anymore.

I like buying the unrefined Ore I spot on merchants. A Large Unrefined Brick costs ~8.5pp. Delivering 4 Large bricks to the merchant (at least in the Bazaar) gets you 44pp, and resets the merchant.

The Small Unrefined Bricks cost ~3.5pp & the 4 Small Brick delivery gets you 22pp, if I remember right.
