Question about Hollowshade War

I hunted owlbears in the cave for a long time and didn't get a single substance a little while back. Do they only drop when there is a war or they have taken over a camp or was I just insanely unlucky? Thanks.

Drops only come off the mobs in the south islands. If you were hunting owlbears in the north caves, you won't get any.

Yes you have to "help" along the war so that the race you want controls the south islands.

Use the search function to find the other posts... there are some quite good guides.

Basically help the side you want to win. Stop the other sides from invading.

I've managed to get myself killed plenty of times in HSM, with my 28 beastlord. But when I've had enough, I take my 55 monk in and get back some.

I've read a lot about the HSM war, but haven't had the patience to try any of them. Usually, if I see the wolves/bears up, I'll spend a little time collecting sustances, if I need them. Last time I checked on E'Ci, the bears had the island, the wolf caves were empty, and nary a grimling could be found.

Ok i guess getting myself killed is out lol. Eqatlas had it listed as up to lvl 40 so I thought they might be tough but at lvl 60 they don't even hit me. I still don't quite understand how to trigger the war but luckily the wolves had the south islands and they were dropping

Substances don't only drop from the south islands, they're just rare everywhere else. You may have just had bad luck in the caves if you didn't get any. (That said, the south islands are worlds better than anywhere else in the zone.)

which mobs drop?

In Hollowshade Moor after the south is taken by one or the other which owlbear or sonic mob seems to drop the substances. I've hunted cubs, razorbacks defenders and others with no success, however when the zone has sonic wolves in the NE side the wolfling seems to be the only one to drop it.

I've gotten them from virtually every variety of sonic wolf or owlbear on the south islands (though I've never actually seen a wolfling or an owlbear cub on the islands -- are you sure you were actually on the islands?). Just run around killing everything on the islands, they'll drop the substances eventually.
