  • Skill up data to 250 and thoughts (very long)

Hey all, long time reader but this is my first post.

Last night, I finally dinged 250 smithing. I love reading others'
skill up data so I thought I'd post mine. My smith, Kelenaa, is a
Dark Elf Necromancer on Prexus currently level 59, though I did
the bulk of smithing between levels 51 and 53 basically not
leveling to smith instead. I returned to exping around 240 skill
having made max adjusted skill. My recorded data below began the
last week of October last year, so a bit more than three months
of dedicated smithing and selling went from 156 to 250 skill.

My skilling was completely self-funded through countless hours in
the bazaar. I started making necro spells via research and
selling them as well as buying underpriced spells and reselling.
I made and sold a lot of Heady Kiolas for a time. I vendor mined
for spider/spiderling silks and pelts. Then I moved on to Acrylia
breastplates and greaves, though that market crashed for me as
people start gouging more and more on windstones and the price on
Acrylia kept dropping. Acrylia selling for 1100 and the 2
windstones needed to make it at 300 each equals not worth it. I
did POTC reselling, buy low sell high. Finally I was able to make
sickles myself and luckily at the time although I could barely
make them, the market had been out of sickles for a week, so I
was able to almost break even despite costs of 3000 or so to make
a sickle. This lasted only a few skill points though. Soon after,
as I began to be able to make them more consistently, of course
the market crashed. Hardly a sickle up for sale for a couple
weeks, I finally get the skill to make them, and BAM! The next
thing I know, a half dozen smiths I'd never seen before all had
gobs of them. The price plummets to 1200 pp per sickle for a
month. That was a tough month as I lost a lot of money on sickles
since I had to sell them below cost. (I am very stubborn, I'll
lose money before I let anyone undercut me). I struggled through
until the market recovered and slowly made my way to 250.

Fortunately, the market has been pretty steady at 2K for the last
month or so. I've made a tidy profit mostly on sickles and
outfitted Kelenaa with lots of neat toys. You can make a profit,
even when a market is crashing, if you are patient and willing to
put in lots of time. I don't have two accounts, so whenever I am
not out exping, I am in the bazaar selling. A lot of times,
especially on weekends, I stayed in the bazaar rather than exping
during prime selling time. I considered that as part of my
smithing time, I could not have afforded to skill up on sickles
otherwise. However, I have never once /auctioned anything, nor
have I sold any complete POTC kits. I've just left myself logged
in and let my wares sell, while doing other things.

I did my early smithing at 239 int with geerlok. I improved my
gear as I could afford it. Around skill 188, I was up to 245 with
geerlok. At 220 skill, I was up to 250, and I finally had 255 int
at skill 232. This was without KEI. I am a necromancer, KEI is an
abomination. Its the principle... I don't remember exactly when
the patch that made smithing skillups easier was but I think it
was about the time I started making sickles. I was lucky to never
have to endure any true hell levels. I think 65 combines was the
most I did for any one skillup.

Note that except for buying Imbued Emeralds and getting
enchanters to enchant Adamantite, I did all parts of every
    combine myself.

    ---

On to the skill up data.

First, pre-sickle I did Fine Steel (fs) and Shadowscream (ss). I
did most of my acrylia before I started keeping track building up
cash to get serious. To start, I didn't record success/failure
just the number of tries to get each skill up or batch of skill
ups. All this is copied over from my notes, hopefully I didn't
mess up. This was formatted in a fixed length text editor, so it
probably doesn't line up correctly on the board:

    157-169 39 fs 170-177 45 fs 178-179 29 fs
    180 2 acrylia 181-182 24 fs 183-184 38 fs
    185-188 40 fs 189 12 ss 190 9 ss
    191 15 ss 192 14 ss 193 6 ss
    194 5 ss 195 65 ss 196 26 ss
    197 8 ss 198 44 ss 199 19 ss
    200 6 ss 201 18 ss 202 16 ss
    203 4 ss (no increase) 13 ss

    ---

At this point, I switched over to sickles. I recorded each batch,
the number of successes, and the number of skillups in that
order. If the batch wasn't sickles, I put in parenthesis what it
was. Acrylia, Black Acrylia (BA), or Blue Diamond Cultural (BD).

Congratulations, and it is interesting to see how you did it. I never suspected Black Acrylia was good for skillups.

"(I am very stubborn, I'll lose money before I let anyone undercut me). "

When there are two people with that attitude at the same time, a market will get ruined very quickly. Hence 1200 for a sickle instead of 3000. The two (or 3 or 5) of you would have sold exactly the same amount of sickles, at the same speed, if you had left the price at 3000.

Now that you're at 250, you aren't making items for skillup at all, but maybe for profit. You'll have to decide to cooperate with the other smiths, or compete against them. You'll also have to decide whether to compete for certain businesses with your high success rate, or leave some markets to up-and-coming smiths so they can break even.

On my server, sickles are selling at mostly the same price they were six months ago, 3k or so. Sickles are left to those skilling up: we usually let the new smiths undercut us, and they've been reasonable about it. But if someone comes along with a 24-hour trader and tries to undercut all our CT and PoN armors by 2 percent, there's gonna be trouble. We won't cede the *entire* market to someone new without a fight. Solstice robes, though, are less than one fifth the price of six months ago. Exactly the same quantity of robes and sickles are sold each day in the bazaar... just different competitors produce different results.

I hope you've talked with your fellow smiths and know them by more than their bazaar prices.

No, I never said I undercut anyone. I said I won't let anyone undercut me, there is a difference. I will always match the lowest price and the times when I am the only one, I move back to my stock price (currently 2K). If I log on to find my price the lowest, I will increase it to match the currently lowest price, as long as that price isn't ridiculously high (i.e. matching it would make me look like a gouger). Interestingly enough, now that sickles have recovered, they are the only 'major' POTC item on Prexus that has mostly held its price. Robes, Idols, and Fishing Rods are all below 1000 pp now. Just a couple months ago Robes were 1.5-1.8k, idols 2-2.5k and fishing rods 1500 ish, with sickles 2-2.4k, so we smiths are the ones least trying to screw each other over, at least in the long term.

BTW, black acrylia is not good for skillups. I made it mostly because I could. I included every combine that was not trivial in my tally.

Medford? After reading your post, sound more like you come from Revere.

(yes, nothing to do with smithing, haven't even read the post yet - just giving a fellow local a hard time . )

Nah, she never once said it was "wicked good".

I lived in "Mefford" for 2 years - am now in Quin-zee.

              Congrats on reaching 250!!

                Rant

Regarding undercutting, there are a few johny-come-lately smiths on my server that skilled up on sickles because apparently they have the budget for it. Now those folks are spamming the market with them for 1k or less each.

This greatly annoys me for two reasons: (1) If they can skill up on Sickles, they already have a lot of money, but apparently don't consider other smiths who don't--ones for which the profit made on sickles is very helpful /rude; (2) Undercutting everyone destroys the very market for which you raised your skill. In other words, what is the point of skilling up to GM status if you make the skill unprofitable? /rude

Obviously there are other items on which to make profit, but I really hope these dips don't completely destroy one of our profitable 250+ items.
