Not 'RNG' but....
...Ranger!
There's a very good reason that HoH is superb for collecting rhenium ore, and that's simply that 90% of the mobs in the zone are headshottable by rangers.
You collected 30 ores from 500 mobs, which is a 16.6% drop rate. As a ranger I can lay waste to the zone without much effort. Back when I farmed HoH a lot, I think I'd spend 3 hours per stack of 100 ores. This is where drop rarity needs to be put into perspective. When farming you shouldn't be remotely worried about drop rate (loots per kills), but rather farm rate (loots per hour).
So, find a lvl of mob that drops rhenium ore, in an area with plenty of these mobs, and of a type you can easily kill. As you're a paladin, hit Illisain!
One further point worth mentioning is the watching the clock analogy. In your deadend job, you watch the clock as the day ticks on - a 6 hour shift feels like a lifetime. Quit, find a job you love, and all of a sudden the clock seems to be on fast forward. How does this apply to farming? Well find a spot which gives you rhenium ore while also giving you exp/faction/quests/or allowing you to PL a box. Personally I love, love, love farming HoH, and have a mule specifically to hold all the random tradeskill drops. I farm for pleasure, and I have lots of materials to work with when I feel like doing tradeskills.
