Not a real link because this stupid bbs software has dumb rules forbidding me from posting links, or anything even remotely resembling a hyperlink.
As far as "logic" goes, this is a fantasy game.
My main reasoning for wanting a portable version of the one left-out tradeskill is a little convenience (much like the reasoning for all the other ones).
Lots of subcombines are smithing, and it's incredibly annoying to come up to a forge for a couple of combines, only to find that someone has afk'd with it open.
I really don't see it as unbalancing to allow a portable, say 6 slot forge. It'll be just like all the other tradeskills. If you need more slots than that, go to a stationary tradeskill container. But if all you need are metal bits, use the convenient portable version.
Regarding Ngreth's objection to a forge on the grounds that there's no way to require fuel, how does that fit in with the spit? You need fuel to cook food, after all. You also need heat in order to make many beverages.
Further to this, distillation and fermentation are not instantaneous processes. They can take weeks or months to complete, and yet take no time at all in Everquest.
Our heroes can even do complicated tailoring or jewel craft while hacking at a group of 30 monsters!
There is such a thing as taking "realism" too far in a fantasy game.
The reason new accounts can't post links is to help thwart spam-bots that automatically register accounts and post spam links to various nefarious sites. (As a side note, it's fun to say "various nefarious" aloud.) After you've been on our boards for a while, the restriction goes away, and you can start posting links.

Please Take Care! Do not try saying this particular phrase multiple times, quickly, as serious injury may result. One should certainly never try it 3 times fast!
More on topic, I would also like to see the forge made portable for field work, even if only while out with a reasonably large expeditionary force such as a raid... not that anyone ever gets bored on a raid in EQ, waiting on discs to renew or MGB recycle times or anything else. I was just thinking of the support personnel that might be necessary to keep such a device working when far afield from home resources...
And, of course, if anyone *did* get bored while on a raid, they have gems for endless hours of time killing pleasure, right? So, the only possible practical reasoning behind having a forge along in the field would be due to the infrastructure present to support such a resource hog as a forge. So, say, a minimum "raid force" of about 6? 5? 4?

I swear there was a discussion about Collapsible Forge sometime in the past. I even remember someone linking a RL field forge that weighed in the neighborhood of 25lbs. or something. To be sure, it was VERY basic, but a forge nonetheless.
I don't know what the rational is, frankly, though I assume it has been argued back and forth repeatedly and I don't expect to ever seen one ( nor do I expect we'll get a Pottery Wheel or Kiln, for that matter). Shame though.

Never seen that before. Thanks.
What I was actually referring to was something more like http://thurstanm.tripod.com/id7.html. A "real life" example of a collapsible/portable forge. If ever there was an argument for the possibility for one to exist I'd think that'd do it.
