Well, if you go to the main page and go to the calculators and actually punch in your information, its plain to see that they make a difference.
The elegant BP, for example, is 466 triv. At 300 skill, 15% mod, and 425 primary stat entered - it has a 47% success rate. Bump the TS AAs up to 3 and your success just jumped to 73.5%.
I bought all three levels before trying the elegant. I'd recommend getting them if you think you will be making a lot.

95th Dreadlord, Povar-Quellious, 300 Ogre Grand Master Smith, 300 all skills
(glad the climb to 300 is finally over)
Zopharr
95th Priest of Brell, Povar-Quellious, 300 Dwarven Grand Master Smith, 300 all skills
(holds his 15% smithing trophy in his off hand and pretends to dual-wield - and hopes the Holy Dirt of Brell he's carried for twelve years will have a use in the new expansion)
Rishathra
95th Shaman of Inny, Povar-Quellious, 300 Troll Grand Master Smith
(got so tired of looking for a troll smith for armor that I made one)
Marzanna
95th Necromancer, Povar-Quellious, 300 Tinker - Tailor
(still working on Solder, Spy)
I would love to make a lot, but the porous loam seems to be ultra rare.
And i must have been tired not to think of the calcs, thanks for the advice.
I can't remember the exact stats, but I think that 300 smith with a 12% mod had a 49.8 percent chance (or the like) to make a BP - a hair short of 50. Spend the 18 AA, that goes up to 74-point something.
If it was plentiful like the soluble or alkalai loam, I wouldn't bother, but at 150-200k each (when you can find it), I decided it was worth it.

you gotta be crazy to think to attempt doing those combines without 300 skill :P
with 300 and 12% trophy, i've made 5 out of 8 so far with 455+ trivials even with smithing mastery 3. sucks when ya lose a loam and salvage the rest of the vendor crap lol
The AAs are definitely worth it. While not smithing, I failed 7 Taaf combines in a row last night at 292 skill. I then purchased levels 1-2 of mastery (frustrated...) and got success on the next 2/3. Definitely helps.
Using the calculator and putting in my current skill (261) with smithing 3 and 15% mod, I get a 66.75% chance at an item with a 424 trivial.
You won't even be able to attempt it at that skill level since the new recipes REQUIRE you to have learned it from the Book, and the Book is not available to anyone with less than 300 skill.

The templates do not require 300... you require the skill to purchase the book, make the final armor combine or make the augment combine. Whether or not I can actually make the combine is irrelevant, the post was based on what is shown in the calculator and addressing whether or not it was worth it to get the AA's the original poster inquired about. My post was to illustrate the effectiveness of the AA purchase, nothing more.

Actually even the books that allow you to learn how to make the templates requires 300 not just the cultural armor patterns. There had been a bug for a while that allowed you to by pass this by manually but that has been fixed.

The bug was fixed with the SoF expansion. The bug was never on templates. You could always learn the templates (the skill up path) by experiementing on your own. The bug was that the restriction on skill for armor combines was not applying properly and it is now (at least on the Elegant/Sublime/Exalted items).
You are correct in that you cannot buy the book to scribe all the template recipes, but you can still make the templates without 300 skill and learn the recipes the old fashion way.
