  • Are shears a viable part of the skill-up path now?

What are the costs on making shears and are they now a viable part of the smithing skill-up path? I have been unable to investigate for myself due to RL complications ( Darn those RL responsibilites like a spouse, job, and house). My smithing has been frozen at an embarrassing level due to a lack of serious funds. Thanks for the information.

IIRC, I paid a bit more than 78p for the molds, the rest of the items were fairly insignificant, so figure roughly 80p per attempt. I made 2 of each below trivial level, but I don't know how long my streak might have held out, had my wife not kept reminding me I was going to be late for work

      No (with caveats).

Shears trivial below FP levels and unless you are paying more than 70pp for padding, making plate will have a lower cost per failure. Cost per success is about the same if you pay ~5pp per padding.

Overall, I'd say they are viable if you are getting severely gouged for padding, or if you have a lot more plat than common sense.

Well, a Fine Plate cloak combine costs ~80pp (forgive me, it's been nearly a year now), while the shears costs about 80pp and some change (the bowstaff), so it is a toss...but, the molds are only sold in Gunthak, and I havent seen a forge there.

i posted a lil write up here

          http://mboards.eqtraders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4535

net cost was about 700pp to raise from 126 to 142. you do need to run some run around as there's no forge or fletching supplier in gunthak

So these bad boys trivial in the 1 sheet plate range. I'd have to say not worth skilling up on unless padding is a major problem.
