  • Better skill modifers? which to do next?

Yo, at skill 142 now after going trivial on the Ornate Chain.
    Question is :

Im using a geerlok, are there better skill modifers available?
if so, where do i find them?

Also, I have done maybe 10 sets of Fine Plate BP/Greaves, with only one greaves failed. Should I go ahaid and start doin FP? or should I milk the
-considerably- less expensive ornate chain recapes (electrum, gold, etc.) until those are maxed? anyone know which one skills faster?

ok so i lied. more than one question. cmon yall daddy-smithers, learn meh some skillz!
As always, many thanks for the replies!

A few thoughts on the issue. I just went through the exact same phase myself, so I share your pain. :?

If you're farming the ore for Ornate, it's MUCH cheaper then Fine Plate, and you can actually make a profit on the sellback of most items. I did my farming in the basement of Highkeep (for ore and Fine Steel weapons) and the spires of Splitpaw (for FS weapons), as I was of a level to get exp there the same time. As a result, I didn't spend absurd amounts on Ornate Chain.

Others have suggested that the fastest way to get ore is to slaughter the guards in Highkeep for their weapons; it depends on how you feel about faction.

I did Ornate through gold coifs, then I had enough and moved to fine plate. My failure rate (without a geerlok) was remarkably low. If you farm leather padding yourself, then successes sell back more or less for the cost of components; over sessions of 80 combines at a time, accounting for failures, the cost of a KEI, and all components, my losses per session were just slightly over what I paid for padding.

This has been mentioned elsewhere, but I personally felt (no proof or stats to confirm, though) that I was getting skillups at a faster rate when I switched to an item with a trivial 10-20 points above my skill. In a real-world context, this makes sense. You're more likely to learn something doing a complicated combine rather than something just beyond your skill level; you already know most of the latter, with only nuances left.
