But who says you won't be able to make those items?

    From what I have read:

    1) You WON'T be able to see the book on the NPCs and thus buy it from the NPCs to be able to scribe those recipes

    2) You WON'T be able to learn the recipes via experiment (currently there is a bug that is allowing you to learn those recipes, though)

So, from what I have read so far, you will be able to still make the items through experiment. Or, as somebody keeps mentionion, still play Roulette. You just have to use experiment each time.

As I go back to reading the rest of this thread, I will edit this post as needed.

So basically, get your notebook and pencil out, write down the recipe the first time you get it right. Use it whenever you need to do the combine, until you are high enough skill to buy the book and actually scribe the recipe into your list of recipes. IMO the satisfaction of stickin it to the man when you make that ubber something at 270 skill when its 335 skill is very gratifying. I just don't like when you fail and your heart feels like it hit the floor =(.

Except that doesn't work. You can't even attempt the recipes if you have not learned them from the book.

I believe I read that Ngreth adjusted the required skill down to get the top level of books to 275-280 or something like that.

Also, I did not hear if the books are tradeable. If so, a friend with higher skill could get the book for you. This may or may not work.

If the books are initially tradable, though, then folks can get someone with a higher skill to purchase the books and transfer them.

May not help all folks, but for those in established guilds . . . I'm always finding more long-time players in the guild have smithing 270+. may be able to get someone to get them for you.

Heck, I may put a batch up at cost on my trader specifically to prevent #@%& scalpers from trying to gouge folks.

Are they tradeable on live? I haven't bought a book in a long time - plus it's rather pointless to check on test, as it may be different on live.

If they are tradeable, then it makes the entire system of level restrictions and inability to learn by experiment completely pointless. Is there any server (perhaps besides test) where someone will not simply buy up books and sell them on a trader at a profit?

The books and scrolls from the vendors are no drop. At least on Fennin Ro, heh.

Wonder if they are on FV, though?

                Ogre Ore

I cant seem to find any of the Cold Iron ore for ogre smithing combines. Were they maybe forgotten?

Ok, I am a 300 smith. I made a Cobalt Breastplate Template. Now I look through all the recipes that I scribed from the books to make an Elaborate breastplate and there are no recipes. I bought all the books in PoK from the vendors by the library. Am I missing a book or is this a bug? Or do we have to do testing like the old days.

Did you try your Cultural forge? I had no issues making a Cobalt BP template / Elaborate BP.

Edit: Um... ignore the signature. Wow. That's at least five years old.

You quoted me from over 3 weeks ago. Books were tradeable at that point (and no indication from Ngreth at that time that that would change). That's why I asked above if they were tradeable or not on live servers.

Sorry I post on 3 boards (this, live, beta) and sometimes forget where I posted what. Somewhere I posted I made them No-Trade.

The bug is that you can attempt the combine even though you do not know it, you just cannot "learn" it without the book.

Anyone been able to pin down what skill is required to gain access to each level of armor yet?

We instead see it as giving value to gaining a skill. More value than just "I have a better chance." So now having a high skill has a real value.

Additionally... there is nothing in the book itself that skill restricts. Just on the NPC. I am sure you can figure it out.
While overall I can agree with this, does it not also mean that the value of cultural armor also just went up? If only smiths (or tailors) with a 300 skill are the only ones who can make GM level armor, you just limited the number of people who can make it and drove prices up.

I perfer to make my own armor. For my necro, I made his intricate armor with a 178 skill. Sure, I used a lot of shissar scales (close to 80), but got skill-ups and even made a bit of plat selling blood and gems. With this change I have to gain over 100 smithing skill points before I can even try and make the same level armor for my warrior.

At 200 Smithing/Tailoring, I could see up to IX tier books, and the corresponding Intricate/Sacred Culturals. Those go past 300. So for all those saying how terrible it is to require such high skill, it really isn't that high. I can see recipes 100+ points away.
