If you are at 288, I'd recommend waiting for the new path coming out in the 3 October patch.

P.S. If I recall correctly, Ngreth said there weren't any combines that actually had a 'negative' chance, but rather it was a byproduct of the max success caps on some recipes. Since you get an extra roll to increase skill when you succeed, you would fail at an artificially high rate (compared to skill) on some combines, missing the extra skill-up rolls which - if strength was under 401 or something (don't quote me on the number) actually combined to make you less likely to skill up on those recipes.Garshok

It's not an extra skill-up roll, but that the chance to skill up on a failure is the same as the chance to skill up on a success when you have 400 or higher STR, INT or WIS. This means that it's quite viable to skip easier but more expensive/harder to get combines if you can get your stats up to that level - the shaman "cap-breaking" buffs can help significantly with this in the Guild Hall, where the buff timers do not tick down.

Ah, well, guess I need to abandon old theories. Next someone will tell me the world isn't flat.

Well I play on Test so i already have access to the new drops, and they are making life so much easier for the 250+ tradeskiller.
I have been using cobalt and tungsten blanks to skillup on, so far doing very well. I was stuck at 278 for a long time. But I remembered Inferno's so I wanted to give them a shot since I was so close to 300. I had 512 STR and all the max AA, only failed 2 out of 50 so I made 48 scepters. After getting at least one skillup in 20-30 combines on the new stuff I was hoping 50 Infernos would push me to 290 or 291 since they triv at 335.
But alas, I wasted 125,000 pp.

If you don’t hit 300 by the patch, the blue diamond cultural will not be getting changed, and generally tributes well.

Now just have those last four points for Rishathra . . . .

I believe I saw that the trivial for Mistletoe Cutting Sickles wasn't rolled back to 250 as planned. May be a small window of opportunity - costs 350-400pp per attempt (can't recall exactly) and tributes for 1320. That window could close next patch at the end of this month or by the time SOF comes out. Indeed, if it is still open.

Will the rate at which the smithing trophy gains exp from 12% to 15% be reduced, as the stor-bought method is eliminated?

Tae ew weps are IMO easier...as they dont require and hides/skins.
I did tae ew 2hander triv of 295...they also tribute for 3675 each.
One blood from froglok, sarnak, iksar and tae ew are needed as well as one sheet metal and molds for heavy steel blade, hilt and pommel.
When I was short on bloods to make into tempers I did some old school cultural bracers. For ogres I needed elven, human and dwarven bloods.
Lots of BD's and some enchanted adamantite......A slight pita but the bracers tributed for 7278 each..and triv at 335.
Dont know any other race's old school cultural armour recipes, but I am sure they are similar, with similar tribute amounts.
Another sucky way was sickles....however I read somewhere that they are nerfin the skill/triv needed for them.
TS trophy was fun maxing too. I started mine after hitting 300 smithing so when I completed the quest...my trophy was at 6/7 for 12%.
I did sickles til it was max 7/7 at 15%.
It was pretty much 100 successful combines per 1% equalling 1000 combines to max it.
