  • How early is too early?

    Hey all,
First post around here, so I apologize for the noobdom ahead of time. I have a 20 wizard (Highest char) and a 7 paladin. I really like the paladin more, but I'm aware that without decent gear and such, he wont be much help or very popular in groups. So I'm trying to level the wizzie and get pally-complimentary TS's (i.e. - Smithing). I was wondering when (level wise) is it ideal to start smithing? Should it advance with you, or should you start at lvl 20, 30, etc.? Just curious. I'm collecting rusty weapons already. Thanks all!

The earlier you start, the better. As you are advancing through the zones you will come across items that you can use in skilling up or items that you can sell to fund your tradeskilling. Stay close to your trivial to minimize loss and always remember to get STR buffs when you are working the combines.

It's never too eary, and it's never too late. However, if you know that you want to be smithing then it's good to try to XP where you can get drops that can be used in smithing. Also, know what you will need later on and set aside anything useful you can get. This will save you Money or farming time later on.

A few examples from personal history:
when I was level 1-5 I would tarnish every rusty weapon I got before selling it to a vendor. As I grew I saved anything that would be used in cultural tempers, and even went out of my way to XP in places like Crypt of Dalnir & Sebilis just to get components.

I started with my Pally around level 20, but I don’t see any reason NOT to start even earlier. As soon as you finish with the freebie quest and get to 50 go do your trophy. That way as you skill up your trophy will evolve. It prevents your from having to do some more expensive combines later, the starter trophy is cake at 50. It is kinda nice to see it evolve too, another reward for sitting there click, click, clicking.

When I started out smithing i used to fish for rusty weapons then sharpen them before i sold em hehe:-) I would try to lvl your wiz untill he/she gets decent AE spells then AE greenies for cash and or tradeskill suppleys.I would do the DoN armor quest since its easy and the recipies are cheepist at the lower lvls.Check merchants for suppleys like LDoN temper materials, swirling shadows etc. And start stockpileing em :-) Your gonna need tailoring and brewing to at least 50 ish for smithing .Good Luck:-)

Thanks for the responses, all! Much appreciated. Started farming rusty weapons already, lol. And have some printed recipe lists to go along with it, so I know where to hunt and what to loot. Thanks again!

Start smithing at any level. You might also start brewing too because you will need that skill to make tempers when you smithing gets higher. But brewing is very easy to skill up.

Play whatever class you have the most fun with. Gear will come in time for the Pally.

nothing wrong with being a newbie =)
I started tradeskilling as a low level as well and I have loved it ever since.
But if you like the pally more than the wizzy just play the pally. It is true that they are more dependand on their gear because they are a tanking class and need to be able to take hits, but aggro is just as important and your stun spells ("cease" is great! many lvl 70 pallies I know still use it) can take care of that part.
Gear upgrades will be available to you as you start leveling up, don't worry too much about it and just have fun, we all started with just a weapon and a tunic at some point =)
Good gear is mostly important at high levels when the mobs start hitting harder and the clerics can complete heal, but when you get there you can always just stop leveling for a bit and work on your alternate abilities while you slowly work on more gear upgrades instead. (Or you could always farm some spiderling silks, pelts, skins, etc. before that to sell in the bazaar to purchase some items).

If you happen to be on the Drinal server feel free to shoot me a tell, I can help you out with some gear to get you started =)

All the materials you need to get to 262 and higher smithing are easily available and obtainable at your level. Just remember one thing. Luclin is your friend when it comes to smithing.
