I got a very good price on 4 stacks of yttrium ore a few days ago... should I use these now for smithing skillups (I'm at 253 smithing) or should I save them for my tinker later on? I am not sure which is harder to do post 250.

    Any thoughts?

I'd save for tinkering, you can always do MCS to 300 for smithing.

You should transfer to the Quellious server and give them to me.

I'm on luclin, so he could always save 70 dollars (or whatever the fee is) and give the Ytt to me, smithing is only at 262! Flethcing though.. spent over 150k and still stuck at 297!

MCS are very expensive (350pp each to make I think). I'd use the yttrium you bought to get up whichever skill is lower, blacksmithing in your case.

You might want to try farming the thought horrors yourself and see how you do. I can get 10-20 pieces per hour, depending on whether they dispel my buffs early or not.

Hey, I'm on Luclin too, and I could use them for working smithing up on my baby rogue ... < evil grin >

Seriously, it depends on how much money and time you're willing to throw into smithing. MCS are a very viable path to 300, but it's both expensive (since there's near-zero return on successes) and time-consuming (due to subcombines). You may have old-world or blue-diamond cultural options as well; for example, some cultural armors have great tribute values; you can sell them for more than enough to make up your costs.
