  • DE smith

Greetings im a young DE smith and am having problems getting started all the guides list skill leveling items i am unable to get in my home city , im currently practicing for the new progressive server and am wondering if there are any guides or even suggestions Vet players may have for me to get started , i greatly appreciate any help or comments , i want to do smithing for my own personal use i will roll a DE SK , and am more apt to enjoy a trade skill opposed to just grinding levels out to farm greenies for my gear.

Pre Kunark Smithin ~ What this DE did back in the day..

You will make whatever you can with metal bits for skill... Probably toolboxes, cause they were actually profitable as 8 slot giant bank containers cause they were cheaper than sewing kits...

Then you will be making banded armor. Cause people will wear banded for a few dozen lvls... 1pp per ac is a profitable selling point. You will need a friend who lives in EC tunnel to hawk the banded as you smith it.

You can farm the bricks in lavastorm if the sheet metal vendor isn't in neriak. (he wasnt orignally) The banded armor molds are in neriak. If ya got a human friend, there was orignally a sheet metal vendor in freeport.

Back before the sheet metal vendor, and back when sheet metal didnt stack... I did lots of runs from lavastorm to Neriak at really slow speeds, encumbered down to 25 to 10 or so... I would recommend having a mage friend for WR bags... especially since they dont poof if you LD now. The rock dervishes in lavastorm drop the bricks for banded, and are groupable around level 12. Expect to spend alot of time crawling through neriak from the bank the forge if you farm the bricks.

After banded its runs to get fine plate metal. And its conveniently located in rathe mountains... Large molds are in Oggok. Or you can bank em and get a lift back to neriak for small molds. I think FP went for 7pp per ac. Its been a long time so not sure on that offhand.

Having gone through this myself, I suspect the op is talking about the skill-up routes from 37 to 92. When trying to do it as cheaply and easily as possible, most suggestions are to do either lanterns or dairy spoons into the sixties, but neither scalar nor lantern molds are available in Neriak.

And that, unfortunately, is the bottom line on that. It is reasonably convenient to do banded in Neriak, but it is going to be pretty expensive for those first 30 or so skill points after 37. Sorry, but I just don't know a (simple) way around it; there's just not many other items that trivial in that range, and none of those that do are a viable alternative.

Actually, after a little further research, there are some other alternatives. You can make javelins and a variety of shields/bucklers into the 60's or so in Neriak. You will have to make your own sheet metal starting from small bricks (or small pieces if you want to go that far), but you would have to do that anyway for banded. I'm not sure on the sell-back on these but I'm planning to check it out and I'll post what I find.

Sell back on javelins, various round shields and bucklers is similar to the sell-back on banded, in terms of how much you lose per successful combine. Javelins are the cheapest to make. You will lose something like several silver to a gold on a successful combine, and of course will lose about a plat on a failure, but the trivials are all in the 60's and so you will have a better success rate between steel boning and banded. At least it's an alternative in Neriak.

            I used the following:

sharpen rusty weapons (save the tarnished weapons)

turn the tarnished weapons into ore

convert ore to bricks/blocks/sheets as you see fit...bank it all

            this gets you to 30

            make bucklers to 60

            targ shields to 88

            banded armor to 115

all use the ore made from the rusty weapons which are plentiful at low levels.

            FS plate to 188

all components are farmable except the molds and should be sellable for a decent price on Progression server.

Past that look at your cultural armor as the acrylia etc wont be available yet.

The ore to make the metal sheets for banded is available from the guy in the 'Blind Fish' by the dart boards. Takes a while hauling ore up to the forge there but thats an easy way to make sheets.

Otherwise, the routes as shown above are good. Anything thats cheap is a good plan
