  • Smithing Advice needed?

I am currently at 228 in Smithing. I was wondering what are some of my alternatives to do Shadowscream gear. I dont have a ot of resources (think i have less then 5k), so also wondering what would best for me to work on in terms of money availibilty. Any thoughts/advice is real helpful.

Shadowscream would probably be your best bet then. With the coin loot on the shades in Twilight Sea, you will actually make money at Shadowscream (not very fast but some anyway).

The drops off the rares in twilight sea will also give you a bit of tribute. Think the highest is 120 but tribute is tribute.

If you can get shimmering aligned ore from yxtta and up in GoD, there is a recipe that takes you to 248 that uses only one ore per combine. I don't recall the recipe offhand but it's the hand-to-hand velium recipe from GoD.

If you're going GoD, make hte Velium Inlaid Claw ... uses one bar of Shimmering Steel and one Shimmering Nihilite per combine ... though you might flood the market (assuming that there is a market for the things).

Personally, I prefer to farm up some Aligned Ore and Pale Nihilite to make the Velium Inlaid Cestus to 232 ... but thats probably not worth it to ya for just 4 points ...

Shadowscream is definately the way to go for the faint of wallet, as time consuming and irritating as it is.

What class/race are you? Have you looked into cultural at all? Perhaps there's something better for you than shadowscream (though, SS is hard to beat for the price; and hard to be for the infuriating farming too. )

velium inlaid cestus has a trivial of 242 according to this site, so it may not be a bad alternative, I will try to get some shimmering nihilite and try it myself since I'm stuck in the 220's atm

I'd look at acrylia chain or plate even tho windstones are kinda hard to get.Its cheeper than GoD weapons at that lvl:-)

I'd suggest taking the (far cheaper!) route of buying raw PALE nihilite in the baz (spend less than 100 plat per, if possible) and aligned ore (not the shimmering stuff, again, don't pay more'n 100 plat per) and make the 232 triv thing.

Shimmering smithing materials, imo, aren't cost effective. You're better off making Mistletoe Cutting Sickles with how much shimmering stuff costs. Heck, if you loot shimmering stuff, you're better off selling it in the baz and using the plat revenue for making MCS.

Great advice Astroshak. I am also stuck at 227 and looking for a bridge or two to Acrylia Breastplates and Shadowscream. Pale Velium Inlaid Cestus is just the trick.

                    Thanks!

One last question, which is better, doing the turn-ins to get 2 bar of aligned ore and pale nihilite, or doing the conversions yourself for 1-3? Couldn't scrounge any info to see which is the better route.

                      Thanks!

Depends on how many you are going to turn in. If you are going to be doing something on the order of 150-200 turn ins.... the do it yourself method becomes better.

                        Check here for more discussion.

I'm doing them myself just because I can, rather then do the turn in. But that is a very pro trade skill way of thinking and I'm probably going to loose money on it for a while yet. But I'm not in trade skills for the money..
I call for the elimination of EQ levels 1-50.

I did the pale velium cestus from 226 to 232 and it took around 110 attempts to skill up that much. I then made my GM helm on the first attempt yay.

If you are strapped for cash, acrylia armor is the way to go. Yes, the stuff for the temper can be a pain to get, but the hunting areas for them aren't bad. Essence of wind and windstones drop in the hidden valley of Twilight Sea. This place is almost always deserted and you can massacre the whole place quickly for a decent drop rate. You will also collect chunks of condensed ice here that is useful for fletching. Windstones also drop in the caves of Grimling Forest, down near the entrance to AC. Plows there will also yield acrylia, sulfur and lots of venderable runes. Finally, AC plows are great. Empty your bags and fill them up with stacks of acrylia, runes, weapons and named drops. From my last trip there I got over 4k in vender loot, many stacks or acrylia I used for smithing, fletching and tailoring and 4-5 named drops I can sell on the baz or tribute.

It takes significant farming, but far from costing you anything, this route is profitable and you get xp in AC at least.

The GoD weapons are good also if you have nihilite and shimmering steel laying around, but the enchated velium for them is a large initial investment.

Excellent posts gents. Based on your comments and the nice hyperlink, I'm looking at around 90-100 combines to get me from 227 to 232. Looks like 80-90 combines to start getting 2 pale nihilite, so I'll just hand them in since I don't expect to go beyond 50 raw pale nihilite to get my 100 pale nihilite.

That gets me to 232. I plan to do Acrylia Breastplates to 242 and shadowscream after that unless the new expansion comes up with a better path.

                              Sure love these boards. Thanks!
