I was wondering what are some of the more rare smithing components that are still hard to come by and needed for current smithing... like what buyable items are used in DoN cultural items, other than the scales, that are hard to obtain?

Midnight Stones are for Dark Elf and Erudite DoN Master's level Smithing.
They are tough to find and not too many people farm Plane of Nightmare (a lot fewer than do Creator missions). They are supposed to drop off the Ravenous Night Stalkers, but I think since they drop Beastlord Epic drops like 98% iof the time that the Midnight Stone drop rate has been severly nerfed on them. After killing about 150 stalkers I think I've seen like 2 or 3 drop.
Since my main and only level 70 character is a warrior, trying to go deeper into PoN than the Stalkers is pretty much a death run for me if I want to do this solo. I can not get anyone from my guild to help farm these things due to the lousy experience when trying. But they will occasionally buy up a stone for me if they see them on a merchant. Quell Bazaar prices are typically 500p to 1Kp per stone if you see one for sale.

Hobgoblins in Nightmare are a better farm for midnight stones . . .as a bard, I often kite them for xp, and I get 1-2 per hour usually.Comment
