To get or not to get

Hello all,

I am currently working on raising my smithing. I have a raw skill of 263 as of right now and a modified skill of 276 with trophy. My question is whether or not I should get BSM1, 2, or 3. I have seen some debate on this in the success for GM thread.

How many of you have it and wish you hadn't and how many don't have it and are happy with not having it?

I have the aa's banked for getting BSM but I have other things I could spend them on if the majority of you don't think BSM is a wise investment.

I do have Salvage 3 and love it. I am just not sure on the BSM.

So far so good. I have BSM 3 and Salvage 3 skill is 267 plus 15% gloves. I have made 5 GM Breastplates in 5 tries and 1 for 2 on GM legs. Str was buffed to 450 which I think helps a lot too.

I have 300/315skill with salvage 2 and BSM2 atm, for me BSM seems to help with succeses (12 out of 15 =80% succes on 386trivs so far) and Im currently working on BSM3... need 2 more AAs for it but definately plan on getting it myself.

I'm not clear whether he is asking if its better not to train the mastery aa's before hitting 300 in order to improve the skill-up percentage, or if he is just concerned that the mastery aa's decrease the success rate rather than actually improve it.

I wish I didnt have it (only got mastery 2) especially as it only helps at lower skills. I have failed 5/8 gm leggings at 345 mod'd skill and am of the opinion that mastery is lowering my success rate.

I know BSM has very little to do with skill ups, other then having a better chance of a success for the skill up. I was just concerned that it wouldn't help success rate or even decrease it.. From what I understand is it will help at lower skill? Won't help at 300? I am not concerned with it working so much at a higher skill.....Yet..... I am hoping that if it is indeed bugged it will be fixed by the time I reach 300.

If you are planning to make a fair amount of high triv items (for sale, or for helping guild/friends/self) and are not planning on skilling to 300 soon then BSM is teh win!

I have a skill of 267 and BSM 3. I feel confident doing just about any combine, and have had acceptable success rates even with things like GM Armor and Black Gold Inlays.

If you plan on running to 300 soon, then there is not as much benefit. This is because you are closer to the trivial levels of the items being made, and it is widely believed that the success rates of the most difficult combines are capped at around 60%.

But, if you plan to hang around the 260's for a bit then the AAs are worth it for someone who plans to make a lot of difficult items.

I do believe I will be getting these aa's now. I don't plan on running to 300 right away and even if I do it would be more for bragging rights and 2100 club then being a profit maker.

Masteries are only good for making GM legs/bps at the skill level you have. Whether that's worth it depends on entirely what you plan to be making.
