  • DoDH Smithing Question

I have been following the information given in the DoDH submission thread, but had a question. I am trying to make the Javelin tips for the nice stat Javelins that are out there, but when I went to the vendor in the Bazaar he did not have any bricks of High Quality Refined Ore. He did however have a Block of High Quality Refined Ore. I bought a couple of blocks, and then tried to split it in a forge to make the bricks. I was given a message that I could not do this in this container type.

Has anyone successfully broken these down to Bricks, and if so.. how did you do it. Thank you for all your help.

I have tried to break large bricks into small bricks, but had no luck with that either.

All other recipies that do this for other types of ore call for the block + a chisel. What were you attempting to use?

I used a smithing chisel, the block of the ore, and the forge. Was told it could not be done when I clicked the go button.

Based in the earlier writeup, it appears you have to smelt the ore first into steel.

The steel can *then* be broken down as other metals.

I tried a bunch of different combines with chisels, hammers and water but couldn't do anything with any of the refined ore sizes except making steel from the large bricks.

I'm hoping that the restocking quest will refill his refined large brick ore allotment as well as his regular ore but I haven't had a chance to try yet. Anyone else try that yet?

Actually, if you read the book of javelins carefully, it says for steel javelin heads, use a small brick of high quality steel, not high quality ore. High quality ore can be bought easily on pok or in other zones, but I have been unable to find High Quality Steel in the new zones thus far. There is a quest with a gnome that says if you bring him scrap he'll reward you. Going to try that next or check vendors in the other zones I can get to. I don't think you'll be able to get it in old zones though...

              **edit**

Just noticed the Writeup link above. Will be heading to abysmal sea tomorrow I guess instead. 8)

There is no need unless you really like the abysmal sea or do not have DoDh. You can get heat sources just inside C. Creep, and the ore in about 5 or 6 zones, including pok, bazaar and a handful of hometowns, unless they have sold-out - there are only 200 small bricks to start, but large bricks and blocks can be broken down *after* they are smelted into steel (actually I've never tried to break them down before but sounds like someone tried).

To clarify posts above, the ore needed is High Quality Refined Ore, sold on High Quality Ore vendors =). The HQRO is smelted into steel first, then one makes the heads. HQO won't work at all.

I am going to assume that the smelting recipe for the block of refined high quality ore to a block of high quality steel is:

block of ore + # gnomish heating source + # high carbon powder= block of refined high quality steel..

which then could be broken down. Has anyone tried the above combine, and if so can you tell me the number of gnomish heating sources and high carbon powders?

                  Thank you....

The in-game book (from the thread I linked above) says:
"To get a block, you will have to take three large bricks, and heat them with
three gnomish heat sources to get them soft enough to work with and meld into a larger block"

No luck here either on breaking down the blocks - there appears to be no use for blocks of refined high quality ore... large bricks into steel are a 10 item combine, nothing in the books, or anything ive tried, about turning the blocks into steel... and no luck in various combinations attempting to break the blocks down into bricks...so... for now, they *appear* to be a complete waste of space.. if anyone has any information that conflicts with that, please let us all know =)

Ummm...thanks...but...those recipes are already known.... the issue is finding a way to break down the Block of Refined High Quality Ore, either turning it into large bricks or directly into Block of High Quality Steel...

Vendor was out of small bricks so I tried with large bricks, you have to do the combine to make it hq steel then the chisel would work. I got 2 small bricks from one large brick. I did not try it with a block since I was looking for quickest route to small blocks.

Chisel + large brick of refined high quality ore = DNC (forge)
Large brick of refined high quality ore + 3 High quality carbon powder + 6 gnomish heat sources = 1 Large brick of high quality steel (forge)
Chisel + Large brick of high quality steel = 2 small bricks of high quality steel (forge)

Those are confirmed. I assume would work with blocks but I have not tried to confirm it.
