I haven't done any combines for people outside my circle of friends recently but when I did I would do the following:

Them: "How much do you charge for the combine?"
Me: "Donate however much you think my time is worth, dear."

I've actually gotten some fairly substantial sums from that policy and they feel warm and yummy afterwards too.
I remember doing some Tae Ew tailoring combines for a guy who wanted to sell the armor, he gave me 1k each, even for the failed ones.
I once gave that line to a person that needed a rez up on 4th island of sky for a quest turn in... My Necro walked out of there 10k richer. /boggle.

You are certainly not wrong to charge for your time and effort. Do it however feels good to you.

If I think someone is asking for a combine for something they will actually keep, I do it for free. If they ask me for say 5 of 1 item then I definitely charge.

I made the mistake of quoting somebody a set price to show up and do the combine. I didn't specify a limit of how many combines. . .

So, he figures he is paying me to show up, may as well get the most out of it, and proceeds to hand me bags and bags of components. I end up making like 17 of 24 attempts, an hour+ of my time, all for my original fee.

I charge 5% of the going bazaar price for a successful GM combine, nothing for a failure. I also charge 5% on high-end combines such as black gold inlays. Guildies and friends are free, but they provide all materials. I don't advertise, but the Expert Smith title over my head brings inquiries every couple weeks, and they tell their friends. I find repeat customers often donate more than the 5% I ask for as well. I don't do combines if the person will be selling the item.

I figure 5% is still a decent enough chunk of change to be worth my time and effort in skilling up and acquiring the patterns, gives me a chance to skill up (still have a couple points left to 300), and suits the customer as well given the expected failure rate.

Hopefully I can find an ogre grandmaster smith and a cut a deal similar to what's been discussed. So far, I haven't had any lucking finding one in the Nameless server.

I'm not a GM smith but i have made some master armor and since i'm a halfling i dont have much demand for armor but i have made 2 sets for people and only charged them cost of items i needed to buy if they supply the dropped components. Oh and btw Sita was 3/3 on making me my GM Augs thanks again hun))
