  • skilling up on ethereal rings/plates

I haven't been playing in a while - and I just started looking at raising my smithing again (it is at a 210 now). It seems to me that the availability of the ethereal stuff is very high atm - and cheap, I could log in right now and buy enough components for 120 ring attempts+ at around 45pp per attempt. This seems like it might well be a whole lot faster than the endless camping for shadowscream or the even more time consuming/expensive acrylia/black acrylia route.

    Anyone tried it yet?

Copied from the PoP Smithing Page:

V ethereal sheet of metal 2 bricks of ethereal energy, ethereal temper, tanaan smithy hammer tanaan forge wt 5.0, medium, all/all, stackable, used in the Planar Armor Quest.

trivial 212, skill-restricted combine, cannot attempt until skill 220 (or until modified 220 skill from using a +smithing item)

V ethereal metal rings 1 brick of ethereal energy, ethereal temper, file tanaan forge trivial >246; wt 2.5, small, all/all, stackable, used in the Planar Armor Quest.

trivial 212, skill-restricted combine, cannot attempt until skill 220 (or until modified 220 skill from using a +smithing item)
          __________________________________________________ ___________

Actually the trivials page is updated, just had to read a bit further. No one knows HOW long it took me to understand the new trivial/abletocombine information.

Basically, your skill has to be 220, with or with out smithing increase items, to even attempt these. BUT (and here comes the big kicker) they are trivial at 212!

So if you have a 210 skill +geerlok, you can make these for 2 skill increases. If you are lucky enough to have one of the 15%+smithing items (*takes a minute to wipe the drool off of herself), then I think you can start the combines around skill 192(I'm not math wiz, this could be wrong), and use them to gain 20 skill increases.

Joy - I just discovered the skill restricted part - but at least I can get 2 skill points of a break from acrylia farming..sigh

BTW it is correct on one page - just found it - but not on the "quests" page where it says

"Have a skilled smith combine a brick of ethereal energy, an ethereal temper (instructions in the plate section above), and a file in one of the forges in Plane of Knowledge. Trivial is >242."

              stupid question

Ok, this is a pretty dumb question, but what does the V mean? I've been seeing it a lot recently and have no clue what it means, does it mean 5?Or x amount?OR probably something else? O well, thanks for your help in advance.

From the top of the PoP pages:
The first column ("V?") indicates if the recipe has yet been verified. All recipes that do NOT have a "V" in that column are our "best guess" based on the recipe text. In many cases, naming and exact recipe are guesswork based on an interpretation of the book/hail text. If there's no "V" listed, then there are no guarantees that the recipe will work as listed.

interesting, if you have 192skill + 15% hammer, which is about 220 skill, when you combine the ring do it say trival message or you can still get skill-up from combine 212 item with 220 skill(192,+15%) ?

shouldnt say trivial your skill isnt that high, just your modified. You can get skill ups i did for 2 pts in brewing w/ a geerlok and celestial tempers awhile back

When doing a skill check with a gearlock or other skill modifier, the reported message is based on your normal skill, not your modified.
Hence if you are doing something that trivials at 212, and have a 210 (modified to 220 skill w/ 5% gearlock) you will not receive a trivial message.
