I have finally given up thoughts of bypassing Shadowscream to vlv up my smithing so am looking into the process. I have found many references to manipulating the war and the fact that the desired mobs have to occupy the south islands to get the drops. There is one thing though that there is conflicting info on. How to trigger an attack. Some say you kill the named of the camp you want to attack others. Some say you killed the named in the camp you want attacked. Anyone know for certain?

What I did that worked for me is to kill the named mob on the southern shore. Not on the southern islands where the stones drop. But south of that up on the hill. Then I would wait for the system message saying ... the owls/wolves are attacking from the north. Then I would go kill a few more mobs on that southern shore, just to be sure. And to check to make sure the named had not respawn. When I did this, the attackers always won. And it seemed to me when I killed the name I would get the system message after about 10-15 minutes.
When I killed the named mobs up north in the caves, it seemed like everything got confusing on who would attack who.

Who attacks who is random... you have to pay attention to the zonewide announcements and adjust your strategy on the fly.
There's 1 exception. When the war is initiated from a fresh start, the camp whose leader you killed to initiate will always be attacked first and that attack will always come from the camp to clockwise.
So, if you start the war by killing the grimling leader (the obvious option since grimlings start in south isles and you want to kill them off ASAP) then owlbears will always attack grimlings in the first move.
After that though, its totally random.

I've done my fair share of warmongering, and best I can tell attacks are random. Your best bet if owlbears and sonic wolves aren't the two controlling factions (ie one camp of grimlings and two of something else) is to complete to war to reset it and then kill the leader.
After that just pay attention to the messages and help or hinder accordingly. Just make sure neither the owlbears nor sonic wolves ever fully take over (which can't happen without player help anyway). Whenever the minority attacks the majority they will win, and when the majority attacks the minority they will lose. Once the faction you want has the southern camp, if they are the minority you are home free for a while. They can be attacked all day and not lose the camp. If they are the majority, however, you need to pay close attention to the messages (which can be tricky if you're AEing). If they're the majority and under attack at the south you'll need to intervene. If they're attacked elsewhere, GREAT! They just became the minority, meaning the southern camp is safe until they become the majority again.

If you are farming the war for smithing stuffs.
If you kill the grimling leader, then the south camp( what used to be the grimling camp) will alternate between Owls and wolves.

It is not really random, the attacks go in a counter-clockwise pattern. The north camp will attack the south, the south will attack the east, and the east will attack the north. As for who is the attacker, I think that is pretty much random. Just watch the messages, and when your camp is getting attacked, help out the defenders (unless you want the camp to switch).
