Salitorn’s Guide to Blacksmithing
First let me say as with any tradeskill this one more than most will cause you pain, mostly in the wrists from the constant clicking. Next if you can get weight reduction bags, you will be extremely happy you did when your purchasing backpack upon backpack of ore. Quick tip as well keep a bottle of sow potions on you, with sow no matter your weight you casn still move. I've weighed over 800lbs and still was able to move with sow.
Okay, first I do not recommend putting 20 training points into this to get it started like most people do. Reason being is that some of the items you will need to make wil require an item tht trivials at 18 and you will be making a ton of them, so you might as well get skillups off them at one point.
**Caution: Nothing goes into the forge stacked. Unstack all components**
Our First recipe we will be working on is for Metal Bits.
Skill [18]
Metal Bits = 2 small pieces of ore (stackable), flask water
These little Arthritis makers trivial at 18 but are used in the next recipe. So, I suggest making roughly 8 stacks or so to get started. For all of you Pale skinned folks I suggest working on this in Freeport. North Freeport (Groflah's Forge, N. Freeport, loc. -21, 474)
If you a Dark Elf, like I am, I strongly suggest purchasing POP and heading for Plane of Knowledge, otherwise it’s very difficult to get the materials.
Skill [38]
Skewers = metal bits, skewer mold, and flask water
Now we get to start buying molds…ohh joy.
Hope you made a bundle of metal bits. Now lets move to East Freeport if you haven’t already. Skewer molds can be found at Traders Holiday, E. Freeport, loc. 136, -296
Keep on clicking. You will most likely run out of metal bits soon. So be ready to go make more.
Hehe more metal bits, time for a couple of Aleve.
Skill [68]
Lanterns = metal bits, lantern casing mold, bottle, flask water
Lanterns molds can be found also at Traders Holiday, E. Freeport, loc. 136, -296 and if memory serves me right the bottles can be found there as well but on a different vendor.
Ready to make armor that no one wants anymore. Have to love the everquest economy.
Skill [95]
Banded Bracer = 1 sheet of metal, banded bracer mold, flask water
Here you get some variety if you like gorget trivial at 92 and boots trivial at 95. The key here is to make items that only use one sheet of metal. Your simply wasting materials otherwise.
Skill [106]
Banded Helm = 2 Sheets of metal, Helm mold, Flask of water
WOOT you should now either be a Master Smith or almost there. Only use the Helm mold if possible, all others are trival to low. I try to stay 5 or lower than the thing I am making if I am going for skillups. You should still be in East Freeport here, but you will be leaving soon.
PREP WORK for Round 2 of Smithing
Okay now we need to make roughly 14 stacks of High Quality rings
Recipe = flask of water, large brick of high quality ore, file (yield 2, stackable)
The large bricks of high quality ore are found in High Pass Hold, Qeynos, and a few other places. I went to the Plane of Knowledge.
All components for Ornate was in Plane of Knowledge. HUGE Plus
Skill [119]
Silver Ornate Chain Gorget = Gorget chainmail pattern, smithy hammer, silver bar, flask water, 1 high quality ring
Goal with ornate chain is the same as with banded, conserve your rings for as long as possible and try to stick to the lesser expensive metals as well. This will get very hard to do at times.
Skill [128]
Silver Ornate Chain Gauntlets = Gauntlet chainmail pattern, smithy hammer, silver bar, flask water, 2 high quality rings
We will skip electrum here since Gold 1 ring combines are not that much higher now.
Skill [135]
Gold Ornate Chain Bracer = Bracer chainmail pattern, smithy hammer, Gold bar, flask water, 1 high quality ring
Remember you really want to be a skilled blacksmith. Penniless you will be but skilled none the less.
Skill [146]
Gold Ornate Chain Coif = Coif chainmail pattern, smithy hammer, Gold bar, flask water, 2 high quality rings
Getting close to half way to 200. I recommend having 6 stacks of rings for this next part alone, we need to get to 155 so we can skip platinum bars and be able to try our luck at Fine Plate.
Skill [155]
Gold Ornate Chain Mail = tunic? Chainmail pattern, smithy hammer, Gold bar, flask water, 3 high quality rings
Well I hope your tired of Ornate Chain, hopefully you will never have to make another piece of it. It’s fine plate from here for awhile now.
Before you go any further with smithing, Invest in a GeerLock Smithing Hammer if you haven't already. +5% smithing may seem small but it will help.
Prep work for Round 3
Fine plate requires 2 items that we need to make.
The first being Leather Padding = silk thread, low quality cat/bear/wolf skin/hide (Tailoring trivials at 31?)
Second Medium Quality folded sheet of metal = 1 block of medium quality ore, water, smithy hammer
Caution here making the MQ Sheet metal will break the bank. 1 MQ ore cost roughly 24pp.
I worked on the prep work here for awhile. I made 16 stacks of leather padding. I started with 6 stacks of metal. Hehe looking back I should have made 8 or even 10, just to have kept from running back and forth making more stacks. I made Sheet metal till I ran out of Padding then bought 2 more for my final skill up.
You can go farm the cat pelts and the spiderling silk for the leather padding or purchase the spiderling silk in the bazaar for around 2p5g – 4p apiece and medium quality cat pelts for 4-5p each. Each combine will cost roughly 10pp give or take. I saw 2 individuals selling the silk thread for the same cost of a single silk.
Skill [163]
Fine Plate Visor = smithy hammer, leather padding, flask of water, Visor plate mold, and 1 medium quality folded sheet of metal
Skill [168]
Fine Plate Bracer = smithy hammer, leather padding, flask of water, Bracer plate mold, and 1 medium quality folded sheet of metal
Next step will jump up to 2 sheets of metal. If you are using the geerlock hammer or a comparable skill modifer item you should be getting a good rate of success.
Skill [179]
Fine Plate Helm = smithy hammer, leather padding, flask of water, Helm plate mold, and 2 medium quality folded sheet of metal
Quick jump to using 3 sheets. I got to 180 using only 6 stacks of leather padding. Ouch there goes that Braclet of Comprehension I was saving up for.
Skill [188]
Fine Plate Breastplate = smithy hammer, leather padding, flask of water, Breastplate mold, and 3 medium quality folded sheet of metal
From 188 it’s either go the cultural armor route , Acrylia or shadow scream, I still can’t make up my mind. Drop rate on the items needed for dark elf cultural seems horrible. Killed Elves last night for 30mins and got 3 elf bloods. And from what I have read this was high. I’ll look more into doing the Shadow scream and see how viable an option that is and that would also keep this guide being of use to more of the guild. With Acrylia you can purchase the items need in the bazaar, but expect to pay lot for it.
