  • Skill-up path for human smith

    Hi Folks,

I have recently returned to Norrath from Azeroth, and am considering trying to GM smithing (before the trivial nerfs happen - I also want to make some of the Stalwart DoN armour - no one seems to be making it on my server atm) -- currently I'm a GM baker and brewer (250, though, not 300). I am a human cleric.

Here's the path I was thinking of following -- I have already maxed out banded (back before the new tradeskill UI, and when you could actually sell some banded pieces to players):

    - racial needles
    - ornate chain
    - full plate to 188
    - LDoN smithing to 212 (since I have a few stacks of the temper ingredients)
    - enchanted velium bits to 222 (I have stacks and stacks of CVT, and some velium too I think)
    - cleansed breastplate to 227 (I have the pre-requisite flags)
-then human cultural (seafarers stuff) as far as I can take it -- I have quite a few stacks of sea foam and saltwater seaweed.

I don't want to spend a ton of money, so I'm going to skip on the sickles I think. Does this sound like a reasonable approach?

    Thanks for the advice!

Full plate takes the same tempers as heraldic armour. I would definately not use those tempers (that take essence of sunlight) for full plate, but would save them for heraldic.

You can make Heraldic armor for skillups too, and Heraldic will sell purely for tribute purposes if nothing else.

There are two tiers of seafarer's stuff. I believe the Fine Seafarers requires celestial tempers and trivials at 335, whereas the other types of Freeport cultural have lower trivials. I found that as a matter of practicality, I would combine anything I could get my hands on. What I thought would be "enough" was in fact nowhere near; I ended up scrounging for literally anything I could combine. At the end of the day, I just went hell-bent for leather (pardon the expression) and started cranking out sickles like nobody's business. Guild and personal tribute remained maxed for a LONG time after that...

D'oh - I did mean fine plate - sorry about that. A bit rusty I guess

If your cleric is Karana worshiping then:

to 188 and you can skip the plate.

Imbued Field Plate BPs trivial at 242 (a good intermediate step). Fine Seafarer's is a good path, but requires lots of Velium Rings (Boots, Bracers, Masks & Collars only require 1 each) and Blue Diamonds. In general, it's not a lot cheaper than Sickles... but there sure are a lot less sub-combines! (Which is why I'm doing Blessed Full Mithril Boots & Bracers... plus, they make for great Tribute!)

I thought about doing the imbued field plate BPs, but unfortunately my deity is Mithaniel Marr, which means I can imbue diamonds (sheesh). It may be worth levelling up a druid for some of the cheaper imbues...

And silly me, when I looked at the recipe for the Fine Seafarer stuff, I read "celestial essence", not "celestial temper" - big difference there Given that BDs now go for about 400pp, and seem to be more rare, I think I may have to go for shadowscream <shudder>. Either that, or just stop at 242 and hope to get lucky on a combine. Hmmmm....

Thanks for the responses so far!

Kaalen, find yourself a cleric of Erollisi Marr for imbues -- Star Rose Quartz is like 1pp and change from a vendor, under 2pp each. Alternately, a shaman of Rallos Zek (ogre, usually) can make Imbued Jade; the raw jades are vendor sold for just under 4pp each. Makes for some happy skillups either way, and the heraldic versions for both deities tribute well too, if you have lots of essence of sunlight.

You can also often find Imbued Plains Pebbles (or regular ones and a Cleric or Druid of Karana to Imbue them) in the Bazaar.

I agree that's also an option, but when I was skilling, pebbles were either non-existant or overpriced (50pp and up) in the bazaar. It was cheaper for me to find someone to imbue the quartz or jade. Of course, in the end I got so desperate that I started using imbued black sapphires and diamonds to skill up ... but that's another story.

I am a human smith - 264. Last month I was at 150. Here was my path. My data is from memory so it may not be accurate.

Expert DoN combines (lambent stones) - 222 (~5-10% skillup chance) &
Enchanted Velium bits - 222 (much faster than DoN due to bazaar quantities at reasonable prices)
                        Cleansed BP - 227
Human cultural was too slow (seafarer)
                        Shadowscream combines & - 248
                        Grandmaster combines - 242

Expert stuff don't have a mod to skill up, nor is it necessary. At 225 you'd still have a 8.5% chance to skill up to begin with.

                            Expert becomes trivial at 222.

This may be a dumb question, but why don't people recommend the racial sewing kits to 162? By my reckoning they only cost about 6 pp per attempt without a bunch of subcombines. They do not stack though - is that the only catch?
