I tried some combines today. I've base skill of 250, and 15% hammer. Mastery 3 and Salvage 2. I went 1/1 on breastplate, and 1/1 on legs. On Augs I went 1/1 on legs and 1 out of 2 attempts on breastplate aug. A good day for me.

edit : I had Salvage save my scale on the fail too! haha

That kicks butt!! Nice luck with the combines there. I still need to finish the GM book quest, but other than that I'm ready to do some combines. I'm gonna try to tailor the symbols and smith the armor to conserve metallic drake scales I think.
