This website has been so helpful with my tradeskills, I love it !!! anyways, I did LDON armor till 209 and I was like i need to do something different, this is costing me way too much so I tried shadowscream-- And let me tell you, at first i was apprehensive because you needed to farm 3 different items for the armor. But as of now im loving it. It's the cheapest way to get smithing up to 250, and if your high level, farming the substance and the swirling shadow is a breeze. I wish i never did ldon armor. Only one good thing came out of ldon armor though, i got about 100k tribute points from it hehe. anyways good luck to you all on your smithing.

      to 250

Personally, I did LDoN plate to 212, EVB to 221, then shadowscream to 240.

That put me at 252 with a gearlock, which is all I really wanted.

Since then, while making Blue Diamond Dwarven plate armor, I've increased to a natural 242, and have also done my smithing trophy (took 4 tries )

I figure, as I make things, I'll get the skill ups. No real rush. I want 250, but not enough to go farm more in Hollowshade. THAT was painful, even if it was cheap. hehehe

While Shadowscream may be one of the least expensive routes, it is one of the most time consuming.

I've been farming Swirling Shadows lately but ever since OoW came out the drop rate on them (outside the kitty city near Paludal Caves) has dropped significantly. Seems like only 1 in 15 lesser shades drop it now. Use to be more like 1 in 8. Either that or my RNG was very unkind to me.

I'm currently at Smithing (222) and am stocking up for both Shadowscream and Dwarven cultural runs (making lots of Earthen Temper). The cultural route will be a lot more costly but if you only make a few of them and try to sell your armor to newbies (what few of them there are these days) you could make up some of that expense. Trick is to find an imbueing cleric and an enchanter to enchant my brellium when I need em. (I rolled up a cleric to do my embuing but I don't have the time to level a chanter up to 49).

So, buy cheap components while ya can and farm farm farm otherwise. The Hollowshade War farming thing can be long and boring but until a faster way comes along you've got only a few choices.

Seems to me like the RNG used to be very nice to you and still likes you somewhat. I would clear that area constantly and get fewer than 10 per hour...and that's killing something every few seconds with a level 65 Bst.

MUCH better drop rates in Twilight Sea (although, limited by spawn rates.)

I agree with this, the drop rate in Twilight sea is much better then 1 in 8. More like 1 and 3 and multiple shadows drop.

And the substances just drop like mad in my opinion, i just farm this stuff while im LFG.
