  • 240 or 241?

Well two questions really. Smithing is my first tradeskill, and im almost 240.

    - I've read lots of posts about skilling, some say you get effective max at 240 with geerlock, some ive seen say 241, whats the answer here, by my math 240 +5% = 252, but is there some kind of wierd rounding im missing here?

    - Is 250 necessary, i.e. are the failure rates with a 5% geerlock the same at 240 + geerlock as they are at 250 + geerlock? Has this ever been shown with actual data?

    Thanks for your time guys.

240 + 5% skill mod is 252. You may sometimes see 243 because some people feel that the cap is 255.

As for the latter it does seem to be capped. Personally I'm at 250 unmodified skill and have the 15% skill mod gloves. I was already 250 before i got the gloves. I've made alot of sickles in my days and didn't notice any difference between 250 with no skill mod, 250 with 5% skill mod and 250 with 15% skill mod. One would expect the difference to be easily noticable between 250 with no mod and 250 with 15% skill mod if the modified skill cap wasn't 252 or 255. By most counts that 37 more skill should increase the success rate by that same amount moving sickles from 50%ish success rate to almost 90% success rate which would easily be noticable.

Though I can’t speak from personal experience, from everything I’ve read it doesn’t mater how you reach your max skill, as long as you reach it. So the only real reason to take your smithing all the way to 250 is for the feeling of accomplishment. I think that most people who have reached 240 smithing have worked so long and so hard to get there that they don’t want to stop just ten points short of having maximum unmodified skill. So it really just depends on your personal goals, and the size of your bank account, as to whether or not to push your smithing skill all the way to 250.

Dunno, most of what I've seen on the GM threads seems to indicate that people get to 250 more for dickwaving than anything else.

I stopped formally skilling up my enchanter's JC at 242 and never really felt any sense of loss because of the numbers on my screen. I've subsequently made it to 249 on gem studded chain, PoP combines and the like. If I make 250, great, but it doesn't effect my chance of success and isn't really worth any effort to me.

Its all about the eye candy

Sorry, got a good chuckle out of it

Anyway, on topic, my tinker plans on stopping at 240. I'll let the rest of the points trickle in over time.
