  • Owlbears and Sonic Wolves...

I have been farming swirling shadows for a couple weeks now, and decided to try my hand at the wailing and shreiking substance.

Immediately upon zoning into Hollowshade from PC, I got to wailing substance off owlbears in that area. Then, lo and behold! I found a cave chock full of the critters. And not a single wailing substance dropped.

A guildie was doing the sonic wolves in the east cave, to get an item to twink an alt of his off a named, and said he hadnt seen anything off them either.

As a level 65 ranger, what is the best place for me to find these items?

The substances only drop from wolves or owlbears on the islands that are associated with the southern camp. That would explain why you got one right outside the entrance to the PC cave, that cave is right by the islands in question. Hope this helps!

I found wolves in Tenbebrous more appealing to farm substances from than wolves in HSM. The HP variatio isn't that huge, they only hit for a small amount more, and when there's no wolves up, I kill aliens and such till more spwan, saving gems runes, substances, and acrylia to sell.

There is a guide on this site to managing the war so you can farm fast in hollowshade. Simply, if the Grimlings control the southern camp, kill the leader. Then kill the 5 guards that pop. Then wait. From this point forward, Owls and Wolves will take turns controling the southern camp. Just kill whatever creatures are on the islands, since you need both.

No point in killing the wolves or owls in the north or east (at least for smithing purposes)

It is amusing to control the war a bit more, and you may need to do this if you get out of phase on wailing or shrieking.

Edit: Here is the full guide. Note the one sentence is now wrong with the guide since they have un bugged the war. The current truth in my experience is " killing a named will cause that race to be attacked".

The article posted is a great help, but yes I've noticed that after some patch a bit back, you need to kill a named in the camp you WANT attacked.

          So /agree obina

          At least on TP.

Just spent the long weekend doing this off and on. I'd say there are two important facts: Camps only attack counterclockwise. I.e. North to South, South to East, and East to North. Never saw them do anything else.

The other is kill a named and somebody will get attacked. I actually killed the Grimling Chieftain, Had the Owlbears attack so I helped them win. Then I killed the Named owlbear now in the south camp. And the Wolves attacked the north camp. So it may just say that that race gets attacked, not that camp.

One other interesting note, may have been coincidence, before I was letting either owlbears or wolves control the south islands however they wanted. And I noticed that the drop rates from the wolves was fairly bad as compared to the wolves. I usually pull about the entire large island because by the time I've looted everything they are either about to spawn, or I can do a small run to the nearby islands. So I forced the war to let the wolves hold everything, and the drop rates were MUCH better. I finished up in no time and was out of there. 240! Now just to decide if 250 is that important to me.

Also, you don't want the war swapping in mid pull. That will waste your time on that pull.

In my experience, killing the named Owlbear in the southern camp did not cause the north camp to be attacked. It is simply that the war was going. Once it starts (one race wiped out ) it continues until one race wins. So kill a named to have that race attacked to start it (counter clockwise yes), then watch it go. I don't think more named killing does anything.

I've helped the Owls and Wolves win the war (cool drops from the special named in fort), but never noticed a difference in drop rate.

Should the smithing guide be updated to reflect the non-bugged war?
