  • How to make money smithing?

    Hi all;

I realize that this topic has been rehashed to death, but in this case, I think that my situation is a little bit different.
A couple of years ago, I developed a blacksmith on another server. I got him up to level 183 and then ran out of money. I have since transferred that character to another server and am starting at zero.
My question is: Are there any lower level items that I can smith (eg dairy spoons) for other tradeskills that might sell enough so that I can actually start to level his smithing skill again?

Thanks for any and all help.

For what it's worth, I've sold Metal Bits, Steel boning, studs, pots, non-stick frying pans, and filleting knives. They don't sell fast, but they do sell.

unfortunately very little of smithing is profitable... or like bryan mentions they take forever to sell.

smithing, imho, is a non-profit organization so you can make the things you need for tailoring, baking etc.

I burned up to 121 for around 300p, then moved on to making humming orbs to 168. Orbs aren't stackable, but sold well, usually I could auction WTS 60 Humming Orbs as xx p each and get 2-3 people respong for orders of as many as I'd sell them. Of course, this did involve farming extensively but it was a pure profit situation in the end. Averaged roughly 450p/hour counting all hours farming and making and them selling cost. So reasonable money return, and I got to 168 in no time.

Funny you should mention dairy spoons. Around the end of last year I sold a bunch... about one a day at 5pp or so. They're not stackable, and 5pp a day doesn't seem like much at high level, but it's amusing to think I'm getting 5pp for a 5sp item. Perfect if you're starting from zero.

I've also had people hire me to make entire sets of baking gear: pot, cake round, pie tin, spoon, skewer, wok, etc., etc. Seems natural that if someone had 0 baking skill and wanted to skill up he might go out and buy a whole set. I've had zero luck selling studs/boning/sheets, but anything else that has an actual use can find a market in bazaar... especially if it's for other tradeskills like baking or tailoring.

There's much more money in selling armor than brickabracks, but you'll have to check the bazaar on your server to see how much competition there is for each type of armor. For cultural armor plate usually sells better than chain, but for all non-cultural armor chainmail sells better than plate.

Nonstick frying pans, metal bits, boning, and some metal sheets were my best sellers in that order. A lot of people are too lazy to go to JP for molds for the frying pan, and it's used for *the* baking skillup path for a stretch in that skill. Other than that, the other baking supplies sold somewhat. Now the sheets and boning, when they finally sold, did sell a decent number since the type of person most likely to buy these premade items are the type to buy many of them.

But I can't say any of this sold very quickly. If I'd compare this with selling say, my tinkered products the tinkered toys win hands down. It is possible to make a profit selling some of these things, but they don't sell very fast. Still it is possible to start small and make some profit to finance future smithing this way.

Thanks for the replies all. I guess to some extent I was on the right track with useable tradeskill (esp baking) supplies. I did make ups some frying pans and have sold about 5 in the last few days. Its a small start, but a start none the less.
I have also gleaned a few ideas from you responses, which I'm sure will be very helpful. I realize its a long road.

One question for splunge. You mention a tribute master. Im completely in the dark here. Can you explain what a tribute master is and where they are located?

                Thanks all

I see things like acrylia boning, acrylia studs, and velium studs for sale all the time at high prices. (300pp per velium stud on my server.) I have no idea if they actually sell, but if they do, those can all be made easily by young smiths.

Tribute masters are located in your home town. If you have a home town that has more than one race, you need to go to the one that's your race. You can trade most droppable items for tribute points, and then use those points to buy buffs of a kind. They are a buff that is active all the time, but doesn't count as a spell (so no buff slots taken), and have an upkeep cost in tribute points. There's a little something for everyone, I'm sure someone can post a list or a link of what they all are and how much they cost.

As a Druid, I make a fortune on Qeynos Afternoon Teas, and Leather Padding sells faster than I can make it. Wyvern Hides and Cobalt Cod sell out every single time I put them up (no subcombine, just farming), but I never use Smithing for anything other than making some of the stuff I need to do other things. Oh, and selling Misty Picnic subcombines sells amazingly well, but you don't make much, and Heady Kiolas.

Unless you just want Smithing, I'd pick another line of work to make a little money :-)

The problem with making acrylic and velium studs is the farming involved and potential competition for farming spots. But if you're into farming anyway then yes, I made my start up cash selling acrylic studs and boning to select people (traded supplies for both cash and a few combines /hug haversacks) and I can only imagine prices have gone up considerably since then. If right now I turned all my bricks and pieces into studs and boning and sold at competitive bazaar prices I imagine I could finance all of the rest of my smithing skillup. Of course it would leave me supply-less so I prefer to take a slower path, but it is a very viable, and if you keep conversion rates in mind, lucrative thing to do.

If you want to make money smithing, don't sell anything in the bazaar. Keep your needed (non-purchased) ingredients handy, and make stuff to-order. You can charge higher prices this way.

Depending on what server you are on you can sell subcombines to make a tidy profit. People with a lot of money will pay to collect the parts to hit *click* with no subcombines.

It makes sense for a high level with a lot of money to do that. As they can make much more plat in the time it takes to make all the subcombines. I can be in PoE or PoF farming instead of making a million subcombines...
