    I was combining my way to 188 on Small Fine Plate Breast Plates.
    I had a +5% hammer equipped and stopped one day on 186. The next day I prepared for 40 combines and began clicking away. I wasn't really paying attention to the resulting messages for the first few combines, but then I noticed that I was being told the item was trivial. I checked my skill just to make sure, it was still 186, I checked the trivial on the database, it was still 188. I removed the +5% smithing hammer and tried another combine, it was no longer trivial.
    As far as I am aware this is not the normal affect of +% items, and it would possibly explain some of the weird trivial levels people are getting on items.

        now does this mean you cant get skillups?

        If so it would really mess up the 2 free combines, and more for those doing smithing with 10 or 15% mod items.

            I didn't see this behavior earlier this week as I got my smithing to 212 on LDoN breastplates with my geerlok in hand. Given the large number of patches since then, something could have happened I suppose.

              I tested your theory today (Christmas day) on LDoN plate helms (sandblasted) and Ethereal metal rings....

              My unmodified skill is 192
              Modified (i'm lucky and have a XTC hammer) 192 + 15% = 220

              ldon, no hammer - not trivial
              ldon, with hammer - not trivial

              rings, no hammer - insufficient skill
              rings, +5% geerlok - insufficient skill
              rings, +15% hammer - not trivial

              assuming the plate helm trivial is really 204, and ethereal metal rings are 212 as it has been reported, this would disprove your theory... i'm not saying that it wasn't there before, but it's not there now, which is very nice for those of us who plan to use rings and enchanted velium to skillup
