PoM and blacksmithing

a fellow guildmate passed me 3 blocks of "Raw Mettalic Substance" last night. Two medium blocks one small. It says it is for tradeskill use. In his time in PoM since the revamp he has only gotten the ones he gave me and he got them off of some mob that took him 2 hours to kite. It appears to be a pretty rare component. Could this be some new smithing component added with the PoM revamp? Has anyone else seen this stuff?

Think anything that can be combined in a container with another set of items is tagged as tradeskill. Probably a combine x y & z in a box like the cards/deck quests from old pom
