  • Hollow war Help pls

I am about to start SS combines ( throughs sanity out the window). My skill is 189 ( woot got 1 skillup for 40 ldon tempers ).
On TM LDon tempers sell for 300 min, which I will not pay. So I guess I am stuck farming for SS components.

I have read Zeralenn Guide (Awesome got me to 189) and read through posts here and on various other sites. Just have a few questions.

Last night the owls where in control of the south Isle. I know I am supposed to kill an named boss. But none where on track and I checked the NW caves (wolfs), east cave (owls) and southern most tent (owl) no named.

Are there PH's ?? IF so what are they called ?? plus any other hints and/or suggestions much appreciated.

    thanks... Zandorian

Sometimes there is no named up. There is a spot in South where the Grimling chief will spawn. Most of the times that Owls control the south I have seen this spot occupied by a Ravenger I think. What I normally do is kill that one and the 2 outside it's tent. Then wait. Most of the times the Wolves will attack if the named/head wolf has not been killed. For Wolves it is normally a named (Scarflank) or a Warwolf that sits in the spot.

    Hope this helps.

If the owls have control of the south, then the war is already in progress. There's really nothing you can do except wait for the next attack message, which happens every 12 minutes. If you want the owlbears to keep control of the southern islands, then fend off any attackers which may be heading that way. If owlbears have control of all 3 camps, then they won the war and a named owlbear should be up in the fort near Shar Val. All camps will remain owl bears until this named is killed. Once killed the war will reset.

Killing a named will only start the war. Once it is started, one camp will attack another but it's random. If a race has two camps and is attacked, they will always lose if a player does not intervene. If a race has one camp and is attacked, they will always win unless a player intervenes.

What you want to do, is have the exact scenario you had last night. Notice, no grimlings are around. That is a good thing for SS farmers. Control of the southern islands will flip flop between owlbears and wolves. You can let the war progress by itself, in which case the southern island will change ownership at random. If you need more of a particular type of substance, then kill any attackers that go toward the southern islands when the race you want already has control of the south.

      Hope that helps...

The only time nothing attacks is when a race has control of all 3 camps. Otherwise, every 12 minutes, 1 race should stroll out and attack another. Could it be possible that in that hour, the owlbears were able to defend the southern position and you were missing the zonewide messages ?

just saw the message for wolfs attacking.

the end of the message says owls where unable muster a defence to stave of the imminent attack. but 5 min later owls still in control

Not all attacks are on the southern islands. It was probably an attack by north on east or vice versa. If owls have south, the following needs to happen:

                - wolves will have to attack southern position

                - if wolves control both north and east, then owlbear defenders will pop on southern outpost. Kill them b/c defenders will always beat the attackers
                - if owlbears control south camp plus one other, wolves will automatically win battle in south

Remember, it's random who attacks who and where.

                  Substance drop rates?

So once the war is rolling along, how often are the substances dropped, or do they only drop at a particular camp?

Substances are most common on southern islands and very rare anywhere else. On southern islands, the owlbears drop em probably about 1 in 3 while the wolves are more like 1 in 4 to 1 in 5.

how to do it quick and easy.

find someone covered in lots of armor (pally, SK, bard even, warrior). find someone that has good PBAE (not rains, PBAE, like wizard or druid).

buff hell out of the meat shield, he goes to all islands, and collects one large train. brings train back to nuker, nuker drops 2-3 PBAE, and you now have wall to wall carpeting in owls or dogs.

loot them all, you'll get 10-15 on average, by the time your done looting, (grab it all, don't be picky) they start repoping, have tank do it again, while you clean out the crap in inventory.

keep following this and you'll collect enough. if they do attack the south, try and head them off or help the defenders untill your done farming.

Working the Holloshade War, made easy.

                        BASICS:

                        1. The smithing stuff you want drops on the ISLANDS in the south portion. The drop rate is fairly good. If you keep a brisk killing pace, you can get two to four stacks in an hour.

                        2. There are 3 camps, north, south and east. Plus the Vah Shir outpost.

                        3. The original position is: grimlings in south, bears in north, sonics in east. I am not sure if the attacks will happen on their own when zone is in original state, usually players have to trigger them.

                        4. There are only three possible attacks: from north to south, from south to east, from east to north.

                        5. Each camp has a 'boss' position. No matter which faction controls a given camp, the boss will spawn in that position. More often, it's a non-named (chieftain, packleader, etc). Sometimes, boss is a named, and can drop some mid-level gear.

                        6. Attack likelyhood: A camp where boss is killed is almost certain to be attacked. A faction controlling two camps is more likely to be attacked. Bears are generally a tad more aggressive than sonics.

                        7. When faction that controls a single camp is attacked, it will spawn defenders. Defenders will usually defeat the ettackers if left up. When a faction controlling two camps is attacked, defenders do not spawn - unless invaders are killed en route, attack will succeed.

                        8. When same faction controls all 3 camps, Vah Shir oupost is overrun, and main boss of that faction spawns there. That boss drops decent stuff, most notable being the FT1 rangeslot piece dropped by owlbear boss. Killing the main boss resets zone to original state.

Starting, and maintaining the war to maximize smithing drops:
When you come to zone, you can see one of following:
                        1. zone in original state
                        2. zone fully controlled by one faction.
                        3. zone has bear/wolf rotation.
                        4. zone has grimling/other faction rotation.

In case of (1), kill grimling chieftain in south, and when bears attack, kill grimling defenders. Soon, bears will take over, and you'll have situation (3)

In case of (2), depends on which faction. If grimlings, go kill the main at the outpost to reset, and then proceed to eliminate grimlings. Otherwise, you might want to farm the south islands for substances first. Especially if wolves have entire zone.

In case of (3), you just come in and farm.

In case of (4), go kill the boss of single-camp faction, eliminate defenders, let other faction take zone, kill their main to reset, then take out the grimlings.

Let me make a suggestion ...

Unless you're someone who can AE a LOT of these guys quickly (say, a 60+ cleric) you're going to get INSANELY bored doing the hollowshade farming. Do LDoN smithing to 210, then make ethereal rings or sheets to 212 with a Geerlok, THEN start futzing with shadowscream. Otherwise you're going to go mad.

If you're worried about LDoN rates, concentrate on EC adventures, Goblin Bones drop more commonly than the other 4 temper ingredients put together.

true thing... but shadowscream can be farmed solo, and LDoN cant be done solo, you always have to find 5 other players, and on my server this is very hard during the non-raid times, so i hardly have a choice ;-)

but farming that stuff is easy for a 65 necro... just grab all mobs on an island with pet hold on, bring them to an open spot and then send pet and tap from time to time -> huge pile of corpses rdy to be looted *g*

Lorddaeth is correct, but it only takes 1 AE cast. When I am soloing I pull about 20 or so since I have to worry about interrupts. When I have a partner, we kill the entire south at once.
