  • Which race to pick as a smith based on cultural

I am considering starting a smith on my old server (stromm's economy was crap already when i quit a few months ago and i assume its just gotten worse). I was wondering which race would be the least painful to raise after 188 based on the cultural. Not talking about BD cultural, or how much it will sell for, just the ease of getting tempers. Here is how i see it:

Human - cultural is a good option, but the tempers are more in demand making the price higher, but i think i can get higher with unenchanted ore than some other options.

Ogre - this looks to be the best option. tempers seem easy to get, and not much demand. Getting ore enchanted is still a problem.

Dwarf/Delf/Hielf - all in the same boat as i see it, tempers are a pain

Iksar - i dont know much about Iksar cultural

Troll - not worth it, or is it?

I think i have all the races with decent cultural options covered, but i may be wrong. Just wondering if anyone has anything more to add, i am leaning towards ogre.
    Thanks

Human FREEPORT culture is rather simple. Non-vendor items are:

    Paddings
    Saltwater Seaweed (fished from OOT)
Mugs of Seafoam (buy from players in OOT/Bazaar)

After the regular version trivs, you can add an imbued gem (jade or plains pebbles are cheap) and continue to 230's. But you don't need to have any ore enchanted for the Freeport culture.

Queynos culture isn't even an option for skill ups (if you didn't already know that).

I spent a few days fishing in OOT for seaweed, and almost never had problems buying seafoam for 20-30pp each. Money was my only limiting factor so I did about 70% shadowscream and 30% culture. If I had more plat, I would have done freeport culture all the way. I can't STAND those blasted sonic wolves.

      For skilling? Human, hands down.

For having something sellable? On Innoruuk anyway, one is just as bad as the other.

Dark elf needs sapphires, which are 105p with nice cha/faction.

Dwarvish needs rubies, which are 132p with nice cha/faction. Dwarvish tempers are also a PITA.

High elf tempers need morning dew, which my woodelf has found in abundance through foraging, over the 40 lvls she's been bound in gfay. Small PITA, but seems less worse than dwarven tempers.

Don't worry too much about getting the ore enchanted. Just takes a little patience, and making friends with enchanters of the necessary level.

Do NOT choose Iksar if you want gains above 188. Our normal cultural tunic trivs at 122 (according to this site), and our imbued cultural tunic (there is no spell to enchant skyiron) trivs a bit above 154. PLUS the imbued version uses scale temper, which takes an Iksar blood to make. I wish I'd tried to get more gains before the trivs were lowered. Our normal cloak trived around 202, and uses purely storebought components, all but the water flasks from one zone.

            Have you considered Barbarian Cultural?

Well I am a Hie smith and I have gotten to 221... There is no quick and easy way to get to 250 as I have found. Even with 6 RL people foraging on second and third accounts for MD it is still a PITA for skill ups.

You want my advice go for the human several reasons (and make your smith an enchanter).
              1. Humans have some of the easier tempers to find/make
              2. Ores do not need to be enchanted to raise above 200
              3. 2 possible routes for the high end cultural
              4. More possible Victums... errr Customers for the high end stuff
              5. If you choose to make the smith an enchanter as well Humans level slightly faster than any other race (This may have changed but I never saw any portion of a patch message saying that it did)

I like Cavel's idea. I happened to have a high elf lvl 12 enchanter/smith at 189 skill when blue diamond cultural first came out. I lvled to 49 for the sole reason I could chant my own mithril (and chained a few chanters to the forge till I did). If my chanter had been human, my possible skillup routes might have been easier. Morning dew is my biggest pita for cultural components.

If I had to do it over, it would be as an Ogre smith.
To date, I've only found one Ogre GM Smith that sells the BD cultural armor. Then I got to track his bazaar mule down to get it. Altho the market is smaller, you are not competing with the hundreds of other smiths trying to recoup losses.

Only downside thats thus preventing me from playing my Ogre Shaman wannabesmith is that the PoP armor is starting to be more readily available. they are still hard to come by and still very expensive but that isnt going to last forever.

As a Troll Smith, I'm not even considering the BD cultural for skillups. Some of the items needed are Lore so that pretty much eliminates that recipe for skillups.

Not to derail, just a side note.

I don't think that Stromm's economy is worse than the one on a mature server. I think it's actually better. The marked might be a bit tight and sales slow due to smaller amount of plat in circulation, but prices are reasonablke and rather stable ATM me thinks.

I wouldn't bother smithing unless you want a nice skill for future expansions, or to make your own stuff that is rapidly being surpassed by other stuff. The big increase in the drop rate of ornate patterns/tunics that Sony put in a little while ago has basically killed the cultural market for BD cultural as well as most everything else, as people save up to buy ornate from farmers.

I'm an ogre at 250 myself, and used to slowly but surely sell a few pieces a week. Ogre cultural is very good for SK's and warriors, although the human cultural(rallos zek) has ogre cultural(rallos zek) beat on all but sleeves. Good enough that I would bother keeping the more popular items in stock so people could see them and impulse buy, or starting thinking about saving up and making a buy eventually.

Now I pretty much just do custom orders, as the stuff doesn't really sell anymore. Nothing moving for weeks.

Time to sit tight till the next expansion.

Since who knows what that might bring -- I'd suggest just playing whatever race you like the most.

i have an alt that is an ogre smith, why an ogre? well, if ya look around, what race are most guild Main tanks.

most people that create a warrior for the purpose of MTing on guild raid pick ogres for their high HP and the no frontal stun ability.

i'd recommend looking at the various guilds on your server and see what races their main tanks are, then pick that race. that will probably be you customer base for the cultural armor.(a high end guild, however, is probably looting better stuff than you would be able to smith). Maybe look at some of the smaller guild, ones that aren't raid the planes yet, and see what races their MT's are.

i've seen humans as maintanks also, but not nearly as many as Ogres.
