  • What's selling well?

I've recently gotten myself up to 200 in research, hoping it'd be a decent way for an otherwise poor mage for his level to make a few plat. I've been leaving trader up in the early morning hours (admittedly not the best time, but it's when the phone line is free to tie up), and so far manage to get between a few hundred and 2-3k or so a night (income, before costs).

My question is : what spells have been selling well for those others who pursue this path? This being a balance between the costs/availability of buying/farming/merchant mining the components and the saleability of the items. Saleability in this instance, not just how much plat can you get, but will anyone actually ever shell it out. Also, has anyone had luck selling the swatches for LoY tailoring? My guess is any tailor high enough to use them probably makes them him/herself.

So far for myself, I've found Mark of Karn to be good. Sells 1k or under, but the components are usually 200pp at most bought from PC's. Cannibalize IV does well also, in the 2kpp range, components bought for 500ish. Burnout IV can turn a nice profit if you can find someone selling Flame of Fennin for under 1k (but only mage researchable).

I've made up a simple Works spreadsheet, with an inventory linked to all the current recipes with any sale value. I buy components when they're cheap and mark them down, then scan the recipe list to see what I could make. I'd be glad to email or post it if anyone thought it might be helpful.

EDIT : Here is a link to the spreadsheet. http://www.geocities.com/minstrel1977/spells.zip Currently, it contains all the wis caster research spells which I have found for sale in the bazaar on Torvonnilous at 500pp or more on a regular basis. I have yet to see the following spells for sale, so I suspect they are either so common as to be non-sellable, or just the opposite, very valuable and hardly ever seen : Acumen, Aegis, Aegolism, Antidote, Blessing of Aegolism, Breath of Karana, Entrapping Roots, any of the Ethereal cleric spells, Hammer of Judgement/Souls, Improved Superior Camo, Khura's Focusing, Levitate, Malo, Marzin's Mark, Mask of the Stalker, Pox of Bertoxxulous, Primal Essence, Regrowth of the Grove, Remove Greater Curse, Spirit of the Howler, Spirit Quickening, Talisman of the Raptor, The Unspoken Word, Yaulp V.

So there's alot left to add in, but the basic formatting is there and should be pretty self explanatory. Just insert lines when you need to add spells or components, and link everything from the top to the bottom when you add it in, then you never need to touch the numbers up top, just change your components as you use them or buy them.

Frankly, Minstrel, I think you're in a better position to answer that question than anyone else. While my chars are all newbs right now, I'd be interested in seeing the information you've collected. Email to scotty_cameron_eh at yahoo.com would be appreciated if you can't post that spreadsheet here.

I'm amazed that Cann IV is selling for that much, I have always seen it much cheaper. In fact, I snagged a couple copies off a vendor very cheap, and took forever to sell them at under 100pp each.

I would buy LoY swatches if prices were fair. Being a cleric I can't make them even if my tailoring was high enough to do the robes... but I ended up trying to lvl my enchanter up to do the combines instead as I have never seen any for sale (on KB). Have to lvl my enchanter to make vials for my pottery anyway... Just letting you know that all tailorers can't actually make the swatches themselves

sp000n, I'll be working on the sheet a little tonight, to add a few more spells, and I'll try to upload it to the web and link it tomorrow night.

graeme : I suspect I got such a good price on Canni IV due to the small size of Torvonnilous. It probably doesn't drop as often here. Although I've seen people as low as 1k on it, there's usually none for sale, or 2 at the very most, so it's been a sellers market.

Lithien : good point, I wasn't even thinking that most tailors aren't necessarily int casters. I'll try making a few tonight and see how they sell. I'm figuring a 25% markup or so over cost, more or less, depending on trivials.

I'm used to EMarr having some of the higher prices on most anything, that's part of why I was so surprised about it.

              edit

See the edit of the original post above for a link to the spreadsheet I've been using. If anyone wants it for their own use, just zero out the numbers, and I'd double check the prices on your own server, as they may vary widely.

Any chance of getting that in a file format other then Microsoft Works? It's a bit obscure.

Excel would be spiffy, if you have that option in your program.

                My interest is peaked.

You should be able to convert it no problem with Excel. Just file/open, and choose files of type all. Let me know if Excel doesn't import it correctly and I'll try to convert it here and put both in the zip file.

Any spell that drops often in POG and is rare any place else, prices went up due to the pog's being fixed. They used to not aggro for a long time letting ppl solo there so prices were cheap.

That is why you see cannib 4 and form of the great bear around 2kish.

The componentless Levitation (lev 51) spell sells anywhere from 5K-10K. Same for Flaming Sword of Xuzl (wiz only lev 59 research).

Levitation and Enduring Breath. 5k to 10k each. They're lore, so it's a bit of a hassle to keep a stock of them. I don't sell one every day, but I sell several per week. Other than that, many of the level 60 spells are still quite rare and expensive, but it's hard to find the components for those. The ultimate spell is Remove Greater Curse, 100k or more... but good luck finding those components!

I made a whole bunch of robe swatches to up my Research skill to 200 in the first place. But they sold very slowly, even after I'd lowered my prices to reasonable levels. The 'new research' items are much rarer than 'old research' so they sell better... but really you'd be better off selling the raw research items than selling the swatches.

Some of the spells that used to be very rare and I *expected* would sell well, like Illusion:Vah Shir and Dementing Visions were just duds. I concluded that selling spells to druids and clerics and shamans was way better than selling spells to other casters, who are likely to have research skill themselves. Especially the spells with multiple recipes. I believe many druids only know one of the recipes for Levitation; they bid up the price on those components but completely ignore the Yaeth's Compendium pages that also make Levitation... so I use those relatively cheap pages to make the spell.

                          more feedback

Here's a quick rundown of what's been a good seller (or not) on Torvonnilous since I made the post originally.

Note : this is from memory, so I may come back later and edit for accuracy, but it should be pretty close as is.

Acumen of Dar'Khura - finally got the components to make it, and sold almost immediately. Had it at 5k, got bartered down to 4k and an item. Just barely made another and am hoping it will sell as well.

Banishment of Shadows - only other one I've ever seen is listed at 18k. Marked mine at 11k (components cost about 3k), but no bites from a weeks worth of night trading. The 18k guy still hasn't sold his either.

Blizzard - sold one at a fairly low price, took a few days, maybe 50% markup if i recall. Components no more than 1k.

Cannibalize IV - hardly ever see it for sale, sold one quickly at 2k, but can't seem to get the components for another.

Girdle of Karana - sold one at about 1k as i recall. Sold pretty quick and I don't usually see it for sale, so I marked the next one up to 1.75k, hopefully it'll move fast also.

Legacy of Thorn - think I've got it at around 3-4k, hasn't sold yet. Only others I've seen for sale have been around the same price range.

Mark of Karn - sold two right away when I first started toying with spells, at 950pp I think. Haven't been able to move another since.

Mask of the Hunter - got one for sale, can't remember price. Hasn't sold yet but I'll update when I get on and look this up.

Nature Walker's Behest - sold one I think at 2k. Only two components, and coin of xev is dirt cheap. So if you can find a cheap words of tenancy, this is great payback for your investment.

Spirit of Oak - selling around 1.5k if I recall right. Sold about 3. They seem to be a good staple to make money on, if you can find the yaeth's at a good price (people don't seem to have settled on a price on torvon yet, just too many different pages gets confusing I think)

The Unspoken Word - only seen one other for sale ever, at 8k. Put mine at 4.5 or so, which will still be a great return on the component cost, if the thing ever sells.

Tigir's insects - haven't sold this yet. Have it up at around 3-4k, cheapest price I've seen it at.

After reading the last couple posts, I'm definately gonna be on the lookout for components to remove greater curse, had no idea it was such a goldmine. Levitation and everlasting breath I'd love to make also, but I've yet to see a dew clover, or sliver of moonstone for sale. Haven't seen a lodestone either for that matter.

Both are 'correct', just alittle more info is needed. Excel does read works files, *.wks. But what they fail to mention is it only reads Works 2.0 or lower. Not 3.0 or 4.0. So you need to open the original file in works, and save as a 2.0 file... then excel will successfully convert and open that.

Corse many of us can't just 'open and save as 2.0' file as works is less widespread then office/excel.

Stupid huh? Would you please to resave it as 2.0, or just save it as .xls.

You gotta love the way Microsoft makes both products work so well with each other.

Enduring Breath is a vendor spell, Everlasting breath (the component-free version) is the one that commands a decent price.
